5.0 out of 5 stars Mothers and Daughters, 10 Oct 2003

I loved this book.
I thought it captured the height of the Troubles really well and was sorry that it had to come to an end. The author has obviously researched the issues involved thoroughly and has possibly even had first hand experience of the Troubles herself??
One to recommend and will appeal to women of all ages-particularly if you have a mother who grew up at the height of the Troubles(as I did)-it will make you empathise with what she had to go through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, loss and passion on the Antrim Coast, 26 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mothers and Daughters (Paperback)
Starting off innocently enough with the tale of two young girls growing up across the tracks so to speak in a small town in Northern Ireland, this novel quickly drew me into the story. Catherine and Jayne are both very believable characters and I built up a rapport with them. I really liked watching the girls grow up and experiencing the joys and pain of first love.

I found that the book, which as I said starts with a fairly placid story line, has hidden depths that draw you in. You want to find out what happens - so much so that I skipped dinner to be able to continue reading. The author knows how to give enough interest to day to day life, without overburdening the story with unlikely events, while developing the plot to its painful climax.

The author choose an unusual setting for her story - the Ulster that really few people hear about. Being used to stories set in the turbulence of Belfast or Derry, the insidious effect of the "troubles" on more mundane life was refreshing. Ms Kaye gives insight into the minds of the Northern Irish, with enough pointers and explanation for outsiders to make for a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I whole heartedly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reader from Boston, USA, 27 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mothers and Daughters (Paperback)
I found the story very relevant to my experiences growing up in Northern Ireland. I do think it would appeal particularly to people that have experienced life in the Province. It is hard to put across the whole concept of an abnormal society to readers who've never experienced it, but I feel the author has managed to do this by her characters and their actions, most of whom were unable to fight the limitations such a society put upon them. Very interesting and fast-paced - I wanted to see what would happen in the end and stayed up late to finish it.
