About the Author
Dr Paul Humberstone has been Head of Modern Languages in two independent schools, a Principal Examiner in French language and literature for many years, and a school inspector. He has been involved in many of the developments in language-teaching syllabuses since the early eighties.

I bought this book after having read an earlier edition of the book belonging to my college. I thought it would be useful for writing essays but I was surprised at just how vital it is for French A level. Especially since the newer version contains a lot more than the previous editions.
I can honestly say that this book is my absolute bible for A level, and I'll definitely be taking it to Uni this year. It has everything in! There are tons of helpful and idiomatic essay phrases for every single section of the essay/presentation and within those, a few phrases that can be used colloquially.
There is also extensive topic specific vocab, which goes way beyond the key terms of the topic, containing vocabulary which you wouldn't even think to use in English!
This can be extremely helpful when researching a certain topic for speaking exams, essays and the like.
I especially like the fact that there are useful little points on which prepositions to use after a selection of commonly used verbs, and a page of synonyms for common words.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to study French for A level onwards. It's inexpensive, and in my opinion an investment when I consider the amount I've used it so far. Couldn't live without it now!

I think this is a really good book (especially if you need help for writing essays) as it has so many useful phrases and expressions, rather than lists of nouns/verbs/adjectives. It covers all the topics covered at A level, such as crime, health, immigration and politics. I do think however that a lot of the phrases are aimed at more advanced students and A level students would only really make use of the simpler phrases.

I'm just coming to the end of my A-Level French course, and Mot á Mot has been my bible throughout. I'd recommend it to any students taking their French studies to a higher level, as its phrases for essay writing are excellent and it is far more useful in this context than a traditional dictionary. It's well organised into different sections e.g - 'Les rapports humains', 'L'éducation', La criminalité, and also has a section of more general phrases which are very useful in helping to structure an essay. A brilliant book and study companion.
