5.0 out of 5 stars American Stories with subtle anti-American themes, 16 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Most of Us are Here Against Our Will (Paperback)
Levinson's stories remind me very much of Alice Munro's—they're more like little novels. I hope he's writing a novel because I'm looking forward to sitting down and reading something much longer. Loved this collection! One of the best to hit the shelves in ages! And such incredible endorsements by Bret Easton Ellis, David Leavitt, Mary Gaitskill, and Edmund White. If these guys don't know what they're talking about, nobody does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Stories, 1 May 2006
By
Chaddy (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This collection of short stories is one of the most haunting I've ever read. The author understands his characters and their conflicts, and he communicates their pain with such delicacy--that the reader feels like he/she is intruding on private moments. Often, after reading each story, I would just close my eyes and let various emotions settle in me before I would gain the courage to read the next one. The author's unmasking of life's underlying truths will leave a devastating imprint on every reader.

I give this book my absolute highest recommendation!

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and bleak tales, 16 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Most of Us are Here Against Our Will (Paperback)
This collection of short stories is both punchy and bleak in its concept. The prose is like having a shot of ten-star coffee injected into your veins, but the buzz is a downbeat one. The themes the author focuses on include displacement, emotional fall-out and despair, and he allows none of his characters an easy time. Not a relaxing read, but definitely a haunting one. Speaking personally, I might have preferred more of an upbeat feel now and again, but that's my only quibble!
