Product Description

Review

'Rutherford handles them all with great tact, his tone fined down, his diction immaculate, and without a hint of extraneous pathos. In the authentically great Butterworth sets Rutherford's approach is exemplary.' --Andrew Clements, The Guardian

'Rutherford brings his Wagnerian bass-baritone to bear on the song repertoire with uncommon skill and sensitivity... With accompaniments of exemplary precision, this disc is highly recommended.' --Richard Fairman, Gramophone - Nov. '12

'All I can do is remind readers that these intelligent performances come with the words (Rutherford's enunciation is all one could wish for) and are in excellent sound.' --John T. Hughes, International Record Review

'Rutherford... a hefty bass-baritone in every sense, [is] inevitably compared with Bryn Terfel, but his voice seems darker and somewhat smoother... Gurney's In Flanders is hauntingly pathetic. Songs of Travel has a notably virile energy, reinforced by veteran accompanist Eugene Asti's unusually driven reading... A very worthwhile recital, therefore, and I look forward to hearing more.' Performance *****; Recording ***** --Michael Scott Rohan, BBC Music Magazine - Dec.'12

5.0 out of 5 stars very good 3 May 2013
Format:Audio CD
I find with a recording or a concert that artists can take me to another place.
The performance of VW's Songs of Travel did just this for me. It's idiomatic. Rutherford is in very fine voice; Asti's accompaniment quite wonderful. Recorded sound excellent. I concur with the excellent review in BBC music magazine mentioned here.
