Robert Hurst, a secret operative in the King's service, is tracking down the mysterious onyx box needed to ransom his kidnapped brother. Moira Muir is seeking the same box for a very similar reason: her young daughter is being held captive. But there are further complications: years ago, Moira and Robert had an affair before he learned she was a counter-spy. And when she discovered she was pregnant, she tricked him into marrying her. Now the two must put aside their anger and join forces to find the box and rescue their daughter ...finding love all over again along the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fate and History in correct proportions 2 Dec 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Why is it I always come into a series at the 3rd book? I guess that is my fate. It is also my fate to have been a history student which does make it difficult for me to read historical romances. That being said, I was impressed that Karen Hawkins did manage to weave proper history into her story correctly. Although some people may object to the whole hidden child theme, it was something that was almost normal in the society of the day. I found this story to be interesting because the author knew that women in the 1820s (for that matter up to 1889) usually lost their children to the father because women were considered too "weak" to raise them. They also were not allowed their own money.

Forgive my tangent here but this is important when understanding the motives of the heroine, Moira MacAllister Hurst. She has had to learn to survive in a world where most women are merely a decorative accessory or a virtual slave. Much of her reported actions are based on a real woman's deception: Princess Caraboo. The author does recommend you find out who she is if you don't already know. All this history is also important to understand the "cover" that our hero, Robert Hurst, takes. He is a "James Bond" but instead of flaunting his masculinity, he plays an effeminate fop of the Ton. Oh, yes, he is 100% man. (I'd quote some of the text but Amazon wouldn't publish this then. Blush.)

I also really liked the sense of time. You, the reader, actually do travel with them. It isn't a case of starting in Edinburgh and suddenly you are in the Highlands. I actually think that Ms. Hawkins may have visited Scotland which is a nice change from some others I have read which have left me in doubt. Even today it takes 4.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite 18 Oct 2011
By JRD - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have been a long time Karen Hawkins fan - but the last few years she have been very hit or miss with me. I am enjoying the Hurst siblings and was looking forward to Robert's story - but it fell flat. I didn't really like the hero or the herione, *SPOILER* I can't stand it when a character keeps a child from a parent based on assumptions, and I felt the main characters had no real spark and their resolution was rushed and shallow. That being said, it was still very well written and had charming moments - loved the letters between the siblings and am still looking forward to Michael's story. I think many people could love this book - I just wasn't one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done 2 Nov 2011

I really enjoyed this book. For me, too, Karen Hawkins has been a hit or miss these last few years, but this one is definitely a hit. I disagree with previous reviewer about having kept the child a secret based on assumptions. In this case she had very good reason to keep the child's existence from the father.
I like a heroine who is her own person, unconventional yet still real. I really liked her and the hero. They were both great together. Ms. Hawkins did a beautiful job with both main characters, and the romance was solid as well. Definitely felt the heat there.
I haven't read the first book of the series, but will now go back and get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies 18 Oct 2011
By Lily - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Moira MacAllister has been a spy, a thief and a con artist, but never before has a job been so important. An enemy has kidnapped her daughter, and to get the child back, Moira has to steal an ancient onyx box. But someone besides her unwanted employer is also looking for the box...a man Moira fears she cannot outwit; her husband.

Robert Hurst has never forgiven Moira for tricking him into marriage. Unfortunately, he also has never been able to get Moira out of his mind. While searching for an onyx box that holds the secret to finding a family heirloom, Robert's path crosses with Moira's once again. This time, however, Robert is not about to let his wayward wife go. She's hiding something from him - something important. But will Moira's secret be the thing that brings them together? Or will it be the final straw that breaks their marriage apart?

I have a new favorite Karen Hawkins book; A MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION! There's an energy in A MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION that buoys the book along at lightning speed. The sources of that energy are Moira and Robert. I love nothing more than a great thief meeting her match, and Moira definitely meets her match in her husband. Individually, both Moira and Robert are lively, endearing characters. As a pair, they have a reckless, wild passion that, when paired with their intelligence and kind hearts, make them impossible to resist.

Ms. Hawkins delivers one heck of a ride in A MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION, and I did not want to put Moira and Robert's book down. In the engaging HURST AMULET series, this book stands out. And given the teasing glimpses Ms. Hawkins has given regarding Michael Hurst and his heroine, I am excited as all get out to read the next HURST AMULET tale!
