Alena is a 19 year old, half sister to Billionaire Vasilii, who is away and thinks his sister is with her old nanny, but she is in hospital and Alena has not let her brother know.
Alena notices Kiryl at the hotel and she has an instant reaction to him, he does notice her, but he is after the same deal as her brother will do anything to get it.
Alena noticed a pen on the floor and thought it was Kiryl's. it wasn't but he took it,he was very nasty to Alena, with his words.
Kiryl invites her to have tea with him, when he realizes who she is he decides to seduce her even though he knew she was an innocent.
And he did with his words and the things he did for her, he tells her about how he was rejected by his wealthy Russian father, and his Mother was an Romany, he does this to get her sympathy, which he does.
They become lovers, even though he knows she is a virgin, but all the time says she has to say she wants him.
Alena tells Kiryl she loves him very much and wants a life with him, he tells Alena when they go back to London he wants to see her Brother, she thinks its to let Vasilii know they are in love.
Alena's appointment was cancelled, so she goes back to her hotel, she hears her brother and Kiryl talking, but my never was Kiryl's words cruel, because he wants the deal, i'm not going to say what they were because it will spoil it for you, but my i was shocked, poor Alena.
It does have a HEA but i don't want to give any more spoilers, a very good book, saying with love and understanding you can be healed, can't wait for Vasilii story.

This story centres on the relationship between Kiryl and Alena who is the sister of Vasilii a Russian millionaire business man. Alena is usually well chaperoned but Vasilii is out of the country and he is unaware that her minder is ill. So Alena is foot loose and fancy free so to speak, this is how she meets Kiryl who unbeknown to her is her brothers main competitor for a business contract, he sees his opportunity to gain an advantage over Vasilii by using his sister against him. So he sets out to seduce her.
The hero in this story did not come across as a very nice man, his treatment of the heroine was abysmal. She was only nineteen but, I did not totally buy that a girl of that age would be quite so gullible as she was. In short she just wasn't modern. More like a character from a regency romance. This was not one of this authors best work.

If you want to understand much of the sub-plot of "The Power of Vasilii", you need to read this book first. My mistake was doing it in reverse.

The plot is simple: rich Russian businessman who dragged himself up from the gutters seduces a rival Russian businessman's sister in order to win a contract. Yep, it sounds rather cold and manipulative. Kiryl Androvonov, the rich upstart, is a haunted man due to the cruel, caustic rejection from his father. In his driven ambition to prove his greater than his father, Kiryl almost becomes the man he has sworn to despise and conquer. He is actually saved by the sweet love of 19 year old Alena Demidova and the clear foresight of her brother Vasilii Demidov. It is the presence of Vasilii that balances Kiryl's arrogance and dominance, showing Kiryl what he could be rather than what he is.

The story is told mostly from Alena's emotional perspective. I did get a bit bored with her heart palpitations, shakes and flushes, such that at one point I wondered if Alena was confused between falling in love or having the flu. Kiryl's inner dialogue is much better as he begins to realise that there is more to life than the ruble/dollar/euro/pound, and the value of life is measured in one's self worth. Vasilii is also well defined as a responsible older brother who already understands love and loss, but isn't trapped by his grief. Alena and Kiryl's romance is the sub-plot to the companion volume and the reason this story should be read first. If you don't, then Vasilii's actions in the second book become far harder to understand and look a bit drastic if not down right nasty.

The ending is thought out well and developed properly and left me with a happy smile. I'm not so sure the Epilogue couldn't have been included in the story proper as we all knew they would get happily married. As these are becoming more stock in trade for HMB books, it's as good as any.

As usual, Penny Jordan has written a fun, escapist romance that is easy to read and full of good imagination.
