Product Description

THE 25th AUGUST 2006 is a day etched into the industrial history of Workington forever. For it was the day that the last ever steel railway lines were produced in the town, signalling the end of a long tradition of iron and steel manufacture extending back to the mid-eighteenth century. Moss Bay was the United Kingdom's oldest and only remaining rail producer, and had over the years, supplied many thousands of miles of track to almost every rail network throughout the world. Many of the most recent photographs in this book were taken on the last day of rail production at the plant and include sevral of the workforce, To many of them it was the emotional end of a lifetime in the industry. Railmaking was in their blood and many of their fathers and gradfathers had also worked at Moss Bay.
