The three stars is not for the music. That gets a not-surprising 5. The two stars are knocked off for the overall package. Whilst I have no complaints about the layout and sleeve notes the whole idea of a 15th Anniversary release just seems a bit lame. The obsession with anniversaries is reaching new standards of pointlessness with some releases even getting a 'deluxe' issue after a mere 10 years. The vast amount of music released over the last 5 decades that remains either unreleased or badly presented seems to have bypassed the major record labels and their sole motive these days is to recycle and regurgitate the same stuff over and over again. In the 90s it was the promise of enhanced sound quality that acted as the selling point. In this age of quantity over quality that idea doesn't sell (it does to me but not the majority of people it seems) so there has to be new ways of enticing buyers to re-buy catalogue albums. B-sides (remember those?), live and unreleased tracks are the order of the day here and although the enthusiastic fan will have the majority of the songs on various releases it is a bonus for the less obsessed fan to have them bundled together on one disc. This is my motive for buying this package. However, having to re-buy a disc I already own is somewhat of an irritation. Usually Universal remaster the original albums in their deluxe edition packages so at least you are getting a different (albeit not always better) version. That makes the 2CD packages a little more palatable pricewise. However in this case the original album has not been remastered (the manufacturing indices on the disc prove this). On this occasion it's a wise decision as the sound on this album was what made it so enjoyable with its warm, analog grooves. So, why bother releasing the album again and, by doing so, charging a premium price. Why not package the second disc as a stand-alone album and price it as such.
I enjoy Universal's Deluxe Editions but I feel this one falls very short and somewhat undermines the principle of these Deluxe issues. The bottom line being it just isn't good value. Disc 2 on it's own would undoubtedly warrant a 5 star review.
