4.0 out of 5 stars Eerie and Enigmatic 4 Aug 2009
By Chinatown Blue TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Reviews I've seen of this film didn't rate it very highly, but I feel it was underrated. The story, set in the subterranean network below Moscow (which is actually for real, though perhaps does not contain any alleged gateways to hell...), is atmospheric and eerie, leading you further into the depths along with the characters. The plot is not explained in words of one syllable, or telegraphed till there are no surprises at all, but you can catch the drift and understand what is happening if you pay attention. Don't wait for massive outbreaks of gore or expensive fx, there are none; this one, like The Orphanage, relies on shadows and startling moments of unearthly clarity to create its effects. The ending does leave some matters open to speculation, but for me that just makes it all the better. Suspenseful and thoughtful.

1.0 out of 5 stars absolutely useless 25 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I gave Vincent Gallo some credit and tried this, despite the non-promising reviews and synopsis. Well, I suggest to avoid it. Any activity, including staring outside the window in a day of rain, will be more rewarding. The plot makes no sense, the whole thing makes no sense, even with one's good will to accept catacomb stories of ghost children. To be avoided.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful is putting it mildly 5 Sep 2010
Format:DVD
Whose sick and vacant mind produced this "picture" and what on earth possessed some rather good actors to take part in this project I shall never know. If you do not want to seriously regret wasting 1.5 hours of your time (which feel like eternity), then watch this film. Nothing happens. NOTHING. AT ALL. AT ANY POINT. Watching paint dry is a hundred times more interesting. There is no plot, there is no action, the characters are ridiculous, you just watch strange people running from one cave to another in total darkness and hear some echoes in the background, but even that sounds more interesting than actually watching it. Zero is what this film is. Awful.
