You need this book if you are travelling to St P or Moscow!,

Although there are no pictures this is an exceptional guidebook. Just enough history to entice you into all the palaces etc, lots of detail on comfort issues like food and drink, interesting titbits of information on everything from Lenin's tomb to the Moscow Mafia.the chapters covering recommended walks were extremely useful and we used many of them - talks you through many of the sights you might see on any route, clarifying street signs and the purpose of strange buildings, plus giving you the whys and wherefores of the history of each place. Only point I'd make to the publisher is that where there used to be a Moscow swimming pool there is now a huge cathedral (although the possibility that this would happen and the history of the site are in the book!) - most of the other information was close enough to still be useful, so obviously not much changes in those cities as the book was published in 1995!!

We chose Cadagon for our independent travel after extensive "guide comparisons". This one won hands down. It will get you up to speed with its thorough (30+ page) history of Russia, and detailed walking tours. We particularly liked the user friendly format of including sites, restaurants, and tranportation on the facing pages of the walking tour maps; more detailed info followed. With the compact size and excellent info, we easily conquered public transportation, including lots of day trips. Memorize the cyrillic alphabet (a must), buy this guide, and have a ball!
