Written by Jeri Taylor, co-creator/executive producer of Star Trek:Voyager, Mosaic is an interesting and varied look at the life of Capt. Kathryn Janeway. The title is one that works on several levels, in that the style of writing is kind of like a patchwork quilt of several different stories within stories. Many different pivotal moments and choices in Janeway's life are covered, building up to a bigger picture of the woman herself.

At the very beginning of the book, we are in what we can assume to be the present. A few pages later, we have stepped some thirty-five years into the past. Slowly, two stories begin to unfold. The crew's troubles with the warlike Kazon (some of whom are trapped on an unfamiliar planet, being hunted down by Kazon ground forces), and the events that have made her the woman she is today.

Although I enjoyed Mosaic a great deal, there were just one or two moments that made me think twice as to whether or not this was an entirely accurate description of Janeway's character. I think this was mainly down to Taylor's description of Janeway's childhood, where she is portrayed as desperate for her father's approval to the point of being passive, as well as a scene where she attempts to give up tennis because she isn't good at it. The latter, however, is remedied later in the book, also giving us an insight into her sheer hate of losing.

If you have any interest in Voyager at all, this book is something you should own. It fills in a lot of the gaps left by the television series.

Star Trek Voyager Mosaic 29 Nov 2002
By "antipodean1" - Published on Amazon.com
How wonderful to listen to the voice of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) as she guides the listener through the events that created the enigma that is Janeway. The story begins somewhere in season two of Voyagers quest to return home from the delta quadrant and then leaps backward in time to provide insight and great back story into Janeways life. For Voyager fans, this is a must hear / read experience, it explains why Janeway acts and reacts the way she does, her isolation, her loneliness and her almost maniacal desire to save her crew, begin to make sense. Jeri Taylor wrote it with recommendations from Kate Mulgrew so its authority is beyond reproach. This book delivers a completely believable and moving story which, when read by Kate, at times had me misty eyed. Great stuff.

It was great I like to listen to it before I go to bed at night. I love to hear Kate Mulgrew speak and be able to change her voice for different characters especially Kes.

Kate Mulgrew's reading of Mosaic brought Cp Janeway to life. 25 Oct 1997

Jeri Taylor filled in the gaps of why Capt. Janeway is one of Starfleet's best. Her battles and triumphs and her lost love. Kate Mulgrew's reading brought the images to life and the story of her character to a new understanding. Great book.
