At the very beginning of the book, we are in what we can assume to be the present. A few pages later, we have stepped some thirty-five years into the past. Slowly, two stories begin to unfold. The crew's troubles with the warlike Kazon (some of whom are trapped on an unfamiliar planet, being hunted down by Kazon ground forces), and the events that have made her the woman she is today.
Although I enjoyed Mosaic a great deal, there were just one or two moments that made me think twice as to whether or not this was an entirely accurate description of Janeway's character. I think this was mainly down to Taylor's description of Janeway's childhood, where she is portrayed as desperate for her father's approval to the point of being passive, as well as a scene where she attempts to give up tennis because she isn't good at it. The latter, however, is remedied later in the book, also giving us an insight into her sheer hate of losing.
If you have any interest in Voyager at all, this book is something you should own. It fills in a lot of the gaps left by the television series.
