Carson McCullers was a great though short lived American author,The Mortgaged Heart is asummary of her early work and ideas, and not the novels themselves, therefor 4 stars. If this book can induce someone to read these wonderful novels, short stories,
they are in for a 5 star read. tcas7820

I love Carson McCullers and finished reading her cannon with this book. This is quite a heavy going at times as it contains lots of work that wasn't published at the time and quite a bit isn't up to the standard you might expect from Carson McCullers. But this is worth a read if you are big fan of McCullers. Think of this book as like the extras offered on a DVD - if it's a favourite movie you will watch all the extras and get more from it than the average person.

McCullers' sister wrote the intro to the collection and she tells us some anecdotes that really bring Carson and other contemporaries to life.

If you are interested in creative writing and the processes a writer goes through to master their craft then this collection might be informative and inspiring for you to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heroine of the American South 5 April 2014

I'm a great fan of Carson McCullers and this book gives insight into Carson the woman as well as Carson the writer. It shows how the promise of young talent matured into an author of great acclaim. And how a work in progress called 'The Mute' became 'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.' Margarita G. Smith the editor of this fine collection of short stories, essays and poetry has done her subject proud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Usual McCullers Style 22 April 2000

Format:Hardcover
Mortgaged Heart is yet another example of Carson McCullers theme of spiritual isolation. You can feel the pain of each character. If you like McCullers as much as I do this is a great one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gifted 26 Nov 2012

I bought this book to give me an understanding of where she started from and also how she developed the deaf character in the book The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I am really glad I did. It made me see that she was gifted but also that she kept at it. She didn't stop and she wrote short stories that I think were the building blocks to her writing novels.

I enjoyed learning about her and the critique of her teachers.

I have already had the collection of short stories. I bought this book just for the essays and articles and they are all great. The book gives some vast info about the author.
