Product Description

Thrust into an Essence Node by what he thought were his benevolent teachers, Alant Cor has transcended the bonds of reality to become the first Mah'Sukai to walk the Plane of Talic'Nauth in thousands of years. Now, he must not only learn to deal with his new powers before they overwhelm and destroy him, he must also escape the wrath of those who hunt him.

Alant's brother, Arderi Cor, has joined the ranks of the mysterious Tat'Sujen Order. He is elated with the newfound powers this secret order has awakened within him. Apprehension grips him, however, by the task they set before him - kill a newly discovered Mah'Sukai before this person gains mastery of their powers. These two brothers find themselves on the opposite side of a forgotten war whose beginning is lost in time. One brother is bent on survival, while the other follows Tat'Sujen orders, thinking he must, to save all he holds dear. Both are set on a collision course with fate. Unbeknownst to the brothers, a strange, gray-skinned girl named Elith also travels this fateful course.

Raised from birth for one purpose - to capture a Mah'Sukai should one return to the Plane of Talic'Nauth. Elith's master, known only as the Revered Father, desires this new Mah'Sukai to further his own gains. Yet, turmoil boils within her. Is this her true purpose? Is she really the only member of her race in this world of Humans? If so, why does she doubt everything she has been taught by the priests? Klain, the beast, seeks his place as a free being in the world of Humans. It is a life he has never known. Yet, is he truly free? Or, is he just another pawn in a larger, more sinister game?

As the magical race of the Elmorr'Antiens reaches out to manipulate the other inhabitants of Talic'Nauth, an even greater power pulls their strings from the shadows. A force, forgotten and unknown to the inhabitants of the Plane, exerts its power to control all the players. How will this power shape the events that unfold...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up! 11 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
The second book in the Genesis of Oblivion Saga picks off where we last found the two brothers Alant and Arderi Cor and the kith (lion man) Klain. The two brothers must come to terms with their new found powers and abilities, particularly Alant who has gained perhaps too much power for one person to have.

Arderi is schooled by his mentor Larith Rine of the mysterious Tat'Sujen Order. Klain who enjoys a charming relationship with the young boy Charver Vimith is soon set on a dangerous path as he accompanies Charver and his father Rohann and his men on an expedition to find the fabled ancient lost city of Sar'Xanthia.

Meanwhile on the Isle of Elmorreth, Delmith an Elmorr' Antien, questions his role in Prince Aritian's experiments on humans. This is interesting as the reader now has a different take on the previously enigmatic and even sinister ancient beings. Perhaps they are not all bad after all?

We are introduced to a new character: the grey skinned and white haired young orphan and trained assassin Elith who has been adopted and trained by the Priests of Fatint on the Isle of Komar. Drake has written a strong female character in Elith who at first seems to be a ruthless, cold indoctrinated killer, but who will soon question who she really is and where she fits in the bigger scheme of things.

If the first book in the series `Farmers & Mercenaries' set things up and asked many questions then `Mortals & Deities' sends everyone down an exciting, unpredictable and challenging path. There is much more depth and knowledge revealed in this entry and we also learn more about the significance of the Essence, the Mah'Sukai and the true motives of some of the characters.

Two brothers fighting on opposing sides is a familiar tale, but it is dealt with skilfully and poignantly here. I do not want to ruin any plot details but needless to say Drake will have you guessing and double guessing throughout. Everyone is set on a collision course and the outcome is uncertain.

We are taken further afield (this time) away from the sprawling city of Mocley, the fields of the farm steads and the picturesque islands. Our main characters find themselves on a treacherous and perilous journey over plains, mountains and into a jungle where exotic and dangerous creatures and a big secret lie in wait.

There are plenty of jaw dropping moments. Once again I found myself racing to the dramatic conclusion wanting more.

I enjoyed Drake's almost `Rashomon' like shifts in character perspective where the same events are seen from different eyes. Everyone is taken out of their comfort zone and everything they think they know gets challenged. `Mortals & Deities' is mysterious, atmospheric and foreboding and will have readers on the edge of their seats!

5.0 out of 5 stars Addicting once you understand the terminology 21 April 2012

My wife mentioned that she met a fantasy author at the 2011 Comic-Con in San Diego, which I was unable to attend unfortunately. Being a fan of that genre, she showed me his book titled "Farmers & Mercenaries - Book One of the Genesis of Oblivion Saga." I figured I would give it a try.
While reading it I often found myself re-reading some words to try and understand the meaning of them. The author makes up a lot of words up, which at first is a bit frustrating, but you get used it it as the story unfolds. After finishing the book, I struggled with deciding if I really liked the story. I decided to read some other random free book I found with the Kindle app on my phone, but after finishing that I kept finding myself still thinking about the Farmers & Mercenaries - Book One of the Genesis of Oblivion Saga book. I went back to that book on my phone and noticed there were more pages after the ending that a sort of dictionary for his book. After reading it I felt kind of stupid for missing this the first time I read the book so I decided to buy his second book Mortals & Deities. This time I headed to the very end of the book to see if there where going to be any new surprise words or what not in this new book. When I started reading Mr. Drake's second book I still found my self becoming frustrated, not because of some new word that I didn't know the meaning of, but because I was not finding enough time in my day to sit down and read it. Now that I have finished Book 2 I am even more frustrated to find out that there is no Book 3! It is an amazing story that gets you so engaged in the plot and each character's story that not only do you find time fly by while you sit down to read, but also that you are almost aching to know what will happen next. I'm am excited to have found an author that gets me so lost in his stories and I will be checking endlessly to find out when another book is released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series! 7 Nov 2010

This series, starting with Farmers and Mercenaries, is a great new series. In many ways the author's style reminds me of Brandon Sanderson. I would rate this right up there with the Way of Kings or The Warded Man. The world that is created is new and not a tired cliche found in the fantasy genre. All I can say is give me more! I'm not sure if I can wait for the third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars mortals and deities 17 May 2011
By Mary Elizabeth Gibson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Mortals and Deities, is along the same lines as the first book, with a few exceptions like the introduction of the new characters which add new life of their own into the already fascinating book. I feel the characters pain and success of their victories. Reading it pulls you into their world where you are getting mad and crying, and laughing with them. You just want to leap into the book and throttle the enemy yourself and you feel helpless along with them. Can't wait for the next book.
