The purpose of the "Mortality Atlas" is to illustrate the spatial variation of mortality rates in Canada in order to facilitate the detection of high-risk regions and any general pattern of disease distribution. This is an invaluable series for health-care educators and researchers, health programme planners and public health professionals to increase community awareness of health problems, to observe and investigate mortality anomalies and to compare trends in mortality. This work features 46 colour maps of census divisions in Canada's 10 provinces and territories illustrating observed mortality from major causes of death in the period 1980-1986, recent trends of mortality due to major causes of death from 1974 to 1986. The atlas contains facts about 17 causes of death including coronary heart disease, suicide, infant mortality, lung and breast cancer, diabetes, stroke, cirrhosis of the liver and AIDS.
