Patricia Lake is psychic; able to read the aura of others and the imprints they leave on inanimate objects. When she investigates a disturbance in her antiques shop, she finds a wounded unconscious man with a stunning, supernatural aura and beautiful glossy black wings. On awakening, demi-God Nico finds his curse kicking in; to fall in love with a woman and become her sex slave until she breaks his heart by not falling in love with him. He and his friend Andreas (a shape shifting snow leopard) were cursed by Hera, queen of the Greek Gods thousands of years ago after they seduced a priestess whose heart they broke before lustfully moving on to a new conquest. Now they both feel physical pain if they fail to give pleasure to a woman who shows interest in them; aware they will gradually fall in love before the woman in question eventually spurns them.
As Nico falls under the compulsion of his curse and begins to fall in love with Patricia, he takes her on a sensual exploration; he and Andreas fulfilling her most hidden sexual fantasies. Although Nico remains convinced Patricia will at some point begin to view their relationship with disgust; she in turn believes her deepening feelings for him are far more than the results of Hera's vicious curse and remains determined to free him; even if it means this wonderful man may no longer find her attractive.
As their adventures take them from Manhattan, to London and then on to Egypt whilst an assortment of Gods, Goddesses and their creations either hinder or help their quest, Andreas too finds himself falling in love with Rebecca; an acclaimed Egyptology professor who also becomes embroiled in their attempt to thwart this curse. Yet even after thousands of years, Hera is equally determined that her punishment of Nico and Andreas will only end if they die, and she's more than happy to not only kill them, but also the two mortal women they have fallen in love with.
Allyson James has written some great fantasy romance series in the past (the highly erotic "Shareem" series and her more mainstream "Dragon" series) and although "Mortal Temptations" is published by Berkley, this book is as spicy as those released by erotic publishing house Ellora's Cave. There is a lot of incredibly hot bedroom action in this book (an exhaustive amount in fact) and the language if far more sexually explicit than I expected. This is not however a criticism, rather a warning to those readers expecting something on par with "Dragon Heat" and its sequels.
I'm a sucker for any cursed hero battling vindictive Gods and Goddesses, aided by feisty human love interests determined to help them in any way, and this story line with plenty of passion and an interweaving action filled fantasy plot definitely entertains. Although the ending is somewhat trite, I will certainly purchase book 2 of this series when it is released in September 09. Demetri; a shape shifting tiger who appears significantly in this book will take a lead role in "Mortal Seductions".
