Book Description

Years ago, Lucas Davenport almost died at the hands of Clara Rinker, a pleasant, soft-spoken, low-key Southerner, and the best hitwoman in the business. Now retired and living in Mexico, she nearly dies herself when a sniper kills her boyfriend, the son of a local druglord, and while the boy's father vows vengeance, Rinker knows something he doesn't: The boy wasn't the target-she was-and now she is going to have to disappear to find the killer herself. The FBI and DEA draft Davenport to help track her down, and with his fiancie deep in wedding preparations, he's really just as happy to go-but he has no idea what he's getting into. For Rinker is as unpredictable as ever, and between her, her old bosses in the St. Louis mob, the Mexican druglord, and the combined, sometimes warring, forces of U.S. law enforcement, this is one case that will get more dangerous as it goes along. And when the crossfire comes, anyone standing in the middle won't stand a chance....

Filled with the rich characterization and exceptional drama that are his hallmarks, Mortal Prey proves that John Sandford just keeps getting better.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid Prey novel 25 Mar. 2006
By SonicQuack VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Although this book's central protagonist has been the star of all the Prey novels, each novel so far has been a standalone story. In Mortal Prey we see the return of a killer from a previous book, and Clara Rinker was such a great character existing readers will welcome her return. You needn't read the previous one as this is still a self-contained story. Clara Rinker is an anti-hero, a perfect mirror image of Lucas Davenport, our hardened hero. It's that relationship between killer and cop that make Mortal Prey a pleasure to read. In fact, it seems that Clara is the central character in Mortal Prey rather than Davenport. The plot takes the chracters outside of the usual parameters of a Prey novel, which keeps it from becoming mundane, with a pace that keeps up for most of the book. The ending, however, is somewhat predictable, with a lack of impact and flair usually found in Sandford's work. A worthy addition to the series, but flawed none-the-less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revenge in a hot climate! 24 July 2011
By Marham VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book features Lucas Davenport but not in his usual locale of Minnisota. The story starts with the murder of the lover of Clara Rinker and her being wounded and as result having a miscarriage. Rinker has featured in another "Prey" novel and we know she is an asassin. She seeks revenge as she realises she was the inteded victim and the people she is after are the crime bosses of St.Louis. The FBI seek Davenport's help.. I found myself hoping that Rinker would get away with her revenge! This is so well written in the familiar Sandford style. It has pace which is esential for a top rated thriller. A must for Sandford fans and anyone who likes thrillers.

3.0 out of 5 stars PREY FOR SOMETHING BETTER! 12 Jan. 2004
Format:Paperback
I have read every Prey novel and am sorry to say I have not been impressed with the last few in the series. Davenport's character is becoming more and more boring and the storylines aren't that good either. Even the fact that Clara Rinker is back in Mortal Prey did not improve things. The plot is slow and the characters unbelievable. I also must say how disappointed I was with the ending. If you are going to take a character into a second book, surely the ending should be a bit better thought out. Sorry John, but this was highly disappointing. The only reason I will be reading Naked Prey is because I have already bought it. If things don't look up in that one, I will not be bothering to buy the rest!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mortal Prey 4 Feb. 2012

I have read all the Prey novels by John Sandford and normally can't put them down until finished. This was OK but Davenport seems a bit softer than normal.

John Sandford writes yet another great story - didn't want to put the book down. The Prey series is believable and the characters interesting.
