More About the Author

Derek Landy lives near Dublin. Before writing his children's story about a sharply-dressed skeleton detective, he wrote the screenplays for a zombie movie and a murderous horror film. "I think my career-guidance teacher is spinning in her grave," he says, "or she would be if she were dead."

Read it 2 days.
It's so hard to say just how good these books are - you really have to read it for yourself.
I've been following these books pretty much since they came out & I turn 18 next month but that's no issue for me because they work for many audiences.
The characters are witty making for hilarious moments and conversations that made me laugh so much it hurt.
There are so many fights you lose count. There are also so many great moments that get you're heart beating at the tension that Landy manages to stretch out over pages and pages making your heart skip a beat. The cliffhangers at the end of each book really do effortlessly leave you craving for the next one.
Seriously, buy and reach and everyone of this truly impeccable and highly recommend series. You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great fantasy you can dive into 11 Feb 2011

I am 13 and I love this book. It is a great rollercoaster of a read. This book will grip you with its wonderfully written plots. It is funny but also dark.It is easily one of the best books I have ever read.
People who have read other books in the series will know to what to expect. But those who haven't heres some info on the characters. The main character is a detective; sounds normal yes? No he's a skelaton who has a tendency to outwit his enemies by taking the mick. His sidekick is Stephanie Edgly. She is a direct decendant to the ancients, which means she can be a powerful elemental-you'll know what this means if you are a fan.
I loved this book but I also liked Percy Jackson series, all the Harry Potters ,Furnace series and Holes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah I love Skulduggery 13 July 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Mortal Coil begins around about half a year after the end of dark days. Valkyrie is trying to find out how to stop herself from destroying the world and they are still trying to establish a new Sancturary in Ireland. Meanwhile, there's a giant psychotic man in a metal mask running around murdering people. So in short, it's all action from the very start!

There are several things about this series that i love and the first of these is the characters. Stephanie/Valkyrie is one of the most amusing and headastrong female leads i've ever read about. She witty, sarcastic and yet loving and caring at the same time. Her emotional human side clearly has an affect on skulduggery and yet she can hold her own against most things that are thrown her way.
Skulduggery himself is still as funny and awesome as ever. I would love to be friends with him. And the way he converses with Valkyrie just borderlines hilarious in some instances. I loved how the friendship changed in this book, and you see how much stronger there friendship has become because of the events in this book.
Fletcher is also just as vain and annoying as in dark days, but he displays a lot more of his caring/loving qualities in this book (particularly in that scene near the end of the novel with Valkyrie, awwwww)

With regards to the plot, it seemed somewhat darker in this novel, but then this is understandable considering that they are dealing with someone who can destroy the world. The atmosphere itself was terrifying and some of the events borderlined disturbing and i felt chills creeping up my spine just imagining what would happen if this actually happened in reality.
Having said that, there isn't any lack of witty banter and humour in this book and i found myself laughing a lot despite the darker tone.

My daughter (aged 10) loves the whole series with a passion.

The main characters are a feisty girl (aged 11 in the first book, but she grows up each volume like Harry Potter) and a skeleton detective.
They are set in a more or less normal world, where magicians, monsters and evil villains fight it out unsuspected by the normal humans.
The plots are varied and exciting, quite scary, but so unreal they are not likely to produce nightmares.

They would be suitable for any good reader over nine, but also for teenagers who want some escapism.
I really enjoy them myself.

This latest book is well up to standard and Valkyrie (now 15) is toubled by romantic dillemmas as well as some new supernatural threats.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a children's book!? 13 Aug 2014

This book.
It is the goriest, scariest, most emotional, most brilliant Skulduggery Pleasant book yet.
However, I'm seventeen years old and I found the gore pretty darn gory. I actually had to put the book down.
It was twist after twist, the dialogue was witty and hilarious (as usual), the fights were written really, really well (again, as usual), and then the ending was both spectacular and completely heart-breaking.

I very, very highly recommend this series.
Skulduggery Pleasant starts off aimed for a younger audience, but like Harry Potter, it matures and becomes darker as the story continues and the characters age, and it's much more enjoyable for older readers, like me. This cannot be stressed enough.
This brilliant book isn't for the faint-hearted.

Format:Hardcover
The fifth in the Skullduggery Pleasant series is what is commonly known mind-blowingly brilliant. I do not understand why it is a 9+. There is so much action and horror in it. The story begins with Val and the famous skull-man, now reunited with his own head. As ussal they are around several dead bodies and as usual also, Landy has filled his book with a spiffing sense of humour. Skulldury now has one of those face thingies that disguise his skull so he has a real face (different every time he puts it on). The book has several stories in it, all twisted up in some way; one is Skulduggery traking down and getting beaten up by the sinister assasin known as Tesseract; another is Valkrie trying to stop her destiny of becoming Daraquess, the also sinister women who is going to kill the world; and also there is the final epic story of all those sinister remnents who escape the midnight hotel. They come and possess hundereds of members of the magic community and the human world. And the best character ever is back; the legendary Billy Ray Sanguine!!!! Only this time he's back with a twist. Oh yeah and there is also a comedy story about them trying to elect a new council for the Irish Sanctuary. Speaking of the Sanctuary, the sneaky americans are after full control of Sanctuaries. The book has at least three major twists in it at the end and blimey they are good. There is also a fantastic cliff hanger at the end and all i can say for that is; Que book number six. The only critisism i would give to it is the daft vampire Caelan i mean c'mon TOUGHEN UP MAN! U DON'T HAVE A CHANCE! Apart from that weird and really strange part, i have no critism. With all the action and death and twists and turns, don't expect everyone to come out alive, or unchanged...
