They were one of the first manufaucturers of electric toasters in the UK 60 years ago so you would think Morphy Richards would know better than most how to design a good toaster. With the "Essential" toaster however, they have designed a toaster with a large stainless steel top (with narrow slots for the bread) which gets so hot you burn your fingers. There is no lifting device so, if you're toasting buns, you have to dig them out with a knife. The top of the toaster is inset into the plastic case with a groove all around down which all the crumbs get stuck. I hope for Morphy Richards sake that the designer responsible for this was on a temporary contract...

I wanted to replace my broken old Morphy Richards 4 slice toaster. This was the closest in looks to it. As it had lasted me for years, I wanted it also to last years, hence the Morphy Richards choice.
I can't live without toast, so had to use a spare toaster(not M.R.) from the loft.
It was a good thing the Morphy Richards came really quickly because I could not have carried on with patchy browning and toast which stuck above the toaster and did not get cooked!!
The Morphy Richards 44170 is a toast lovers friend. Even browning, plenty of adjustment for degrees of browning, bread "grabbers", good looks and a really good price. Thumbs up.

Chose a long-slot toaster so that any size of bread would fit in, and it does that fine. The settings are bit high - setting 1-2 is all that's needed - can't imagine what would happen on number 5. No lift-up function and if you want all of your bread done (ie putting it on it's side), you can hardly reach the slice to get it out. So saying, I searched around for any toaster, at any price, that actually does everything it should and they don't exist (bring back Tefal's thick 'n' thin). So at the price, it's better than most.

I wanted a toaster that could toast any size and width of bread and this totally satisfied my requirements so I can't fault it but compared to one that I had some time ago this seems to take up a lot of space on my kitchen top

This toaster is ok. The rack for heating a roll or a croissant works a treat. I was disappointed that the hi-lift facility doesn't make much of a difference (I'm still poking small things out with a knife!). The markings on the dial are silver which reflects the light and makes it difficult to see the numbers. There seems to be a marked difference in the browning of both sides of the toast, however, I just give it less time, turn it and put it back down for a sort time. It does the job.

Pretty good device, with the ability to toast larger items above the slots if necessary. Works fine, and stays cool on the outside.

This is a big toaster, bigger than it needs to be. But the one thing that not only makes this toaster unusable but also dangerous is the so called 'high lift'. This actually lifts the bread nearly 1cm, this leaves you poking about with a knife to get the toast out. This has to be a design flaw as it is obvious when looking at the slider there is no room for it to work correctly.

Great toaster, works very well, 2 slices or 4 slices at once, fat or thin, bread or rolls, all work well. Browning knob needs turning up quite high, but doesn't get too hot, pops up well, a great buy.
