Could be much better! 13 Oct 2010
By Steve
I owned the previous model which was more attractive with a sleeker handle and less plastic, but it had a poor reputation for leaking. I hoped this new replacement model would been an improvement, but Morphy Richards have again failed to undertake proper testing before putting this model into production.

The spout is smaller than the old model making it difficult to directly fill without raising the sprung hinged lid. Needless to say after a few weeks the lid does not spring open any more, you have to grip the metal lid which may be hot and lift it. I've noticed on several occasions a few drops of water (probably condensation) has got behind the hollow plastic trim between jug and handle and run down on to the illuminated switch. It appears moisture can enter this point at the junction of the hinged lid, where there is a gap. This is a potential safety hazard that is just not acceptable.

It's still one of the best looking kettles you can buy, but overall disappointing and not worth the money with these design faults.

Updated review January 2012:
I've now had the kettle around 15 months and pleased to confirm the minor trickle of water that ran down on to the illuminated switch did not really amount to anything and sealed itself. The disappointment came a couple of weeks ago when the hinged lid fell off, it appears the narrow plastic hinge is not fully heat resistant and the thin spring eventually severed right through the plastic. I emailed Morphy Richards and as the kettle was less than 2 years old they sent me a new one free of charge. Full marks to them for that, but disappointingly they pointed out the replace will only be guaranteed for the balance of the original warranty, which rather indicates they don't think I'll get 2 years use out of the new one.

The replacement kettle also has this very small irritating leak on to the switch, but hopefully it will seal itself soon. The hinged lid also does not spring open when the kettle is hot. When this model packs up in another 15 months it will be my third and very last Morphy Richards kettle!

I bought the previous version of this model and the plastic inspection window cracked and started leaking within two years. Morphy Richards refused to replace but (foolishly) I bought another identical item. This has also started leaking within two years due to the same fault. When spending £60 on a kettle you don't want to replace it every 2 years - avoid Morphy Richards as they don't seem capable of using materials that are actually fit for the purpose intended.

be very wary... 29 Feb 2012

I bought this kettle 18 mths ago to replace the previous version which leaked badly within 2 years. After 18 mths the lid has come off completely. This kettle is just not worth the money and is not sufficiently robust for normal every day use. I agree with the other reviewer who said it's a great looking kettle. True, but if it can't keep going intact for 2 years, it just isn't worth it...
