By A Customer
This review is from: Chess from Morphy to Botwinnik (Hardinge Simpole chess classics) (Paperback)
imre konig the author of this book was a chess master who wanted to explain how ideas developed in chess. he found what he considered to be the most important openings such as the queens gambit and the ruy lopez and explained by annotating important games by strong players from 1840-1950 how ideas beame accepted refined and eventually adopted, this is a highly readable and enjoyable book which will also help you to gain insights into the most important chess openings.

This review is from: Chess from Morphy to Botwinnik (Hardinge Simpole chess classics) (Paperback)
Taking critical openings as his standpoint - the Ruy Lopez - Queen's Gambit - English Opening and King's Gambit - König shows how chess technique advanced and became more sophisticated from the days of Morphy to the time of Botvinnik. This is a book with much painstaking research, both a joy to read and also a valuable instructional manual for those who wish to improve, broaden and hone their strategic skills. Imre König was one of the most travelled of international masters, and represented Hungary,Yugoslavia, England and the USA. His best result was second prize at Hastings 1948/49 - behind Rossolimo but ahead of fellow Hardinge Simpole author Bob Wade.

5.0 out of 5 stars review of chess technique, 2 Dec 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Chess from Morphy to Botwinnik (Hardinge Simpole chess classics) (Paperback)
the author an international master selects the most important openings and shows how chess has developed by analysing them. the conclusion that the queens gambit and ruy lopez are crucial was vindicated by the most recent world championship match between kasparov and kramnik.
