I bought this book around 7 months ago...well two actually, one for me and one for my visiting Mother-In-Law (who is wonderful by the way), she wanted to move from the Shorter version to this one. At first glance and to eyes which have never read or used such a book before (have only been a Catholic for one year), it does seem a little daunting. "How on earth am I going to be able to foloww/use this correctly?", I thought to myself.

Well, with practise, together with some much needed guidance and encouragement (I make the most of living in a town where we have a Convent for retired Sisters, it's there that Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held twice a week), I was very soon on my way to using this wonderful book properly. I have not looked back since.

For me, Morning & Evening Prayers have been and continue to be enlightening and spiritually uplifting. I encourage you to buy this book and use it. If you need help getting started, please don't hesitate to ask a priest or nun - they would be delighted to help as prayers like these are being said less and less by us lay-people. There's also help on the internet to get you started by highlighting the Cycle of Prayer and the Seasons from where you can pick up in the book and use the marker ribbons so you don't lose your place.

To sum up, well, I've since bought another one (for my Wife) and will soon be helping to purchase another from Amazon for an old lady in our Parish. You will get used to shifting from one side of the book to another when used during particular seasons. Seasonal Hymns are contained also as well as prayers for use on Saint Days, plus much more besides.

I bought a copy just over a year ago to use in my parish, before Morning Mass. While it's quite simple to use in this sort of group because there's always someone more experienced to point you in the right direction, it's a bit tricky to use on our own. Although there are instructions given at the beginning of the book, it can be a bit of a minefield if you are using it for private prayer because it jumps about a bit. You do, however, soon get into the swing of it, and I wouldn't be without it now. Much to my surprise, I soon became adept at using it for Morning Prayer with the other parishioners, and I was then able to apply those same skills/technique to saying the Evening Prayer and Night Prayer on my own, at home. Now,whenever wherever I go, I always make sure that I carry my Morning and Evening Prayer book with me. These prayers are now such an intrinsic part of my everyday routine that if I miss them then it has a knock-on effect to my whole day.

I bought the earlier edition of this nearly thirty years ago and it has given a rhythm to life ever since. Morning, Evening and Night Prayer are there in full. Everything for these offices is there for seasons and feasts (in contrast to the Shorter Morning and Evening Prayer, which leaves out quite a lot of the special material).
All that is missing from the full Liturgy of the Hours is the Office of Readings and Prayer During the Day. Many people might want to supplement the material in this book with some longer readings from Scripture and elsewhere; the Weekday Missal is the obvious next step.
I have bought subsequent copies including a newer edition and given them away to people to guide them in their prayer life. It does take a little work to understand where to go, but it's fairly easy to fall back on the four week cycle of hymns, Psalms, prayers and readings whenever simplicity beckons.
On a practical point, to avoid the ribbons fraying too soon, I have found it helps to tie a knot close to the end of each ribbon. My four ribbons sit (1) in the Proper of Seasons or in the Sundays of the Year, (2) in the Psalter, (3) in the Proper of Saints - General Calendar and (4) in the Common Offices, with prayer cards in the Frequently Recurring Texts (most of these can be learned by heart fairly easily), in Night Prayer and in the National Calendar.
My only criticism is that I haven't yet seen an edition with the revised National Calendar for England and Wales included. Someone please correct me if this latest edition has it.

I have recently begun practising my Catholic faith after 20 years in the wilderness. I bought a general book of prayers but felt I needed some structure to my praying hence buying this book. After a few stumbling starts and flicking to the instructions regularly, I began to get the hang of it. I find the combination of Psalms and Canticles enjoyable aswell as having space to say my own prayers. The book is well laid out and the structure of both Morning and Evening prayers are well laid out in table form near the beginning, as are Night prayers. I got round the ribbons fraying by tying a knot in them, which also makes them easier to get hold of when you are going from section to section. I would highly recommend this for those who wish to devote more time to praying.
