3.0 out of 5 stars If Morning Ever Comes 10 Aug. 2010
By Kate
Format:Paperback
Considering Anne Tyler was only 22 when she wrote this book, it's pretty good. It shows her early writing style and is therefore of interest to her fans. However compared to her later books I found this one disappointing,. She does a good job of describing a family who seem to have put their lives on hold since they lost the father; to me the book is about moving on, and the inevitability of change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant as ever 30 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just love Ann Tyler. I did find myself wondering if she had written this as a period piece and it was not until the end I realised it was one of her early books. It is a conceit on my part to think that the portrayal of complex emotions belongs to modern times. Unspoken family secrets are timeless in their ubiquity. As is the dilemma of leaving your family behind to make your own way in the world. Ann Tyler captures so well the risks we take in moving on and the impulse to remain as we are however unsatisfactory. On the way we meet some entertaining characters. It's a thoroughly enjoyable read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting for Anne Tyler fans 12 Jun. 2012
By Ann E
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you are amongst the millions who love Anne Tyler's writing then this book takes you back to her beginnings. It is one of the first novels and so isn't as polished in style as some of her later books where you forget you are actually reading anything and just enter the world she has created. Her slightly uncomfortable main character Ben Joe has all the feel of an adolescent though we are told he is older. As usual the setting is very believable but the reader doesn't lose themselves within the story as much as one has come to expect from Tyler as sometimes the pace of the story jolts slightly between chapters and the introduction of new characters or scenes - something that never happens in her seemless later works.

I enjoyed the fact that it was set in a very different feeling era though not that long ago and in a different part of the US too - and very effectively.

If you have never read any Tyler don't make this your first engagement with her writing, but if you are a fan and enjoy writing as much as reading If Morning Ever Comes is a fascinating early work.

I have read and enjoyed many of this authors works. Not this one. This is the first where i could not be bothered to finish it. I believe it is an early work, now re-issued?

Anne tyler is the best novelist writing today. Like all her other books she writes with clarity and empathy and the storylines are like noone elses. She is the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tyler's wonderful debut 14 Mar. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tyler herself has dismissed her first three novels as being "bitty little things." I wouldn't disagree with that verdict for books 2 and 3. But her first novel is great... not her best (hence the 4 stars) but still not to be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not one of the most enjoyable 31 Jan. 2013

Although I did enjoy reading this Anne Tyler, her style is very appealing to me, I did not enjoy it as much as some of the others e.g. Noah's Compass, Morgan's Passing
