Amazon.co.uk Review

Morgawr, the third volume of Terry Brooks’ "The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" trilogy, continues his productive exploration of guilt, moral ambiguity and adventures in huge airships.

The Ilse Witch, Grianne, has found out that everything she has ever believed, all the reasons for revenge which have led her into evil magic, are a lie--that her mentor the reptilian Morgawr is her enemy--and for much of the book she is in such a state of moral and mental collapse that she has to rely on the mercy of her former enemies and her brother, the young Highlander Bek. As he and the other separated members of his party trek through cold forests and dragon-haunted jungles, they find themselves pursued by the Morgawr’s demonic allies--by misguided troops from home and finally by the Morgawr himself with a fleet full of zombie aeronauts.

This trilogy is about the best thing Brooks has done because it is, much of the time, far less reliant than he has been on the stock materials of fantasy; the mixture of magic and technology here has sparked in him a real inventiveness that can excite even the jaded reader. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks became the master of epic fantasy with the publication of his legendary debut, The Sword of Shannara. Since then, each new novel in the Shannara saga has brilliantly built upon and deepened the world of breathtaking magic, adventure, and intrigue he created. In The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara—his third enchanting series—he literally took his legions of loyal readers soaring to new heights as a colorful contingent of characters took to the skies aboard a magnificent airship on a quest fraught with wonder and danger.

Now in Morgawr, the quest at last draws to its climactic conclusion, as the forces of good and evil vying against each other to possess an ancient magic race towards an explosive clash—and whatever fate awaits the victor . . . and the vanquished. Harrowing confrontations with the merciless Ilse Witch and the monstrous Antrax have already taken their toll on the intrepid heroes of the Four Lands. But their darkest adversary now snaps at their heels, in the form of the Morgawr—master of the Ilse Witch, feeder upon the souls of his enemies, and centuries-old sorcerer of unimaginable might.

With a fleet of airships and a crew of walking dead men at his command, the Morgawr is in relentless pursuit of the Jerle Shannara and the crew that mans her. For the Morgawr, the goal is two fold: to find and control the fabled ancient books of magic, and to destroy the dark disciple who betrayed him—the Ilse Witch. But the Ilse Witch is already a prisoner . . . of herself. Exposed to the awesome power of the Sword of Shannara, and forced to confront the truth of her horrifying deeds, she has fled deep into her own mind. Now at the mercy of those who seek vengeance against her, her only protector is her long-lost brother, Bek Ohmsford, who is determined to redeem his beloved sister . . . and deliver her to the destiny predicted for her by the Druid Walker Boh.

Once again, Terry Brooks weaves together high adventure, vividly wrought characters, and a spellbinding world into an irresistible story of heroism and sacrifice, love and honor. In Morgawr, fans of the Shannara mythos will find both a satisfying finale and the promise of new wonders yet to come.

Having devoured the previous books in this series I had eagerly awaited the final book, and I have not been disappointed. With as many twists and turns as the volumes before it, Morgawr led me to it's heartstopping conclusion in a matter of a day. I simply could not put it down. With his superb writing style and comic twists Terry Brooks has once again come up with a winner. Discover if the Ilse Witch wakes up friend or foe, will the Morgawr catch up with the Jerle Shannara or will the brave ship fall apart first, will Red finally realise her feelings for Bek - or is it a doomed love. All these questions and more are answered in this superb book. Read it.

Morgawr is the third and final installment of the latest Shannara series - The Voyage of Jerle Shannara. The story finally tells us what happens to Walker, the truth about the Ilse Witch and Bek, and introduces us properly to the Morgawr, the Ilse Witch's mentor who up until now we have not really seen that much of.

I have to admit that the book was slow going at first. It begins right in the middle of all the action where the previous book left off yet you somehow feel you've seen it all before. We want something new and exciting! However, as the story unfolds you become more invloved and intrigued until the very end (which is one of the most infuriating endings ever let me tell you!)

The story explores love (for friends, family and lovers), and we get the usual odd gory scene you come to know and love from Terry. I didn't feel that the Morgawr was menacing enough however as the lead baddy. I felt there had been far more scary monsters throughout the series previously.

Despite this, and despite the lack of throwbacks to the original novels, Morgawr is still a fantastic read from the King of Fantasy and one that you will not be able to put down.

I have just finished reading Terry Brooks lastest Shannara book: Morgawr. It is a good read, which looses none of the pace or atmosphere of the previous Shannara books, and which beats the 'Antrax' for being a good read.

This books brings the series of books: Flight of the Jerle Shannara to a conclusion, introducing new plot twists, and new (if hinted at charecters) into the narative. He also keeps up the pace until the very end, keeping the reader on edge until the last line of text.

Where the book does fail is with what Terry Pratchett would call 'Navaritium' the stuff of stories, which hold stories together. TB's charecters often find themselves falling for old tricks, and rather obvious plot avenues. This makes the reading a little disapointing at times, especially as it makes you want to shout 'He's behind you'. However these are thankfully few and far between.

The book ends well (if obviously), and is obviously a spring-board for future Shannara books, however I do wonder whether it will be possible to keep the 'fantasy fiction' feel to the stories now that TB has introduced quite advanced technology into the 'Four Lands'.

To really appreciate the book, one would need to read the other Shannara books first, as these provide the background and narrative elements to the story to make it whole. However, I would imagine that only really dedicated TB fans would really want to read this book in Hard Back.
