Ana Vidovic is simply the greatest classical player in the world right now. Her technical ability is just stunning, and certainly not hindered by the beautiful tone of the Jim Redgate guitar she plays.
Torroba is one the greats, and the "Castles of Spain" set is one of his most popular and performed. So its hard to say this, but it gets a bit tedious. Variations are all well and good, but there isn't enough variation to justify stretching the work out this long. Sorry Torroba's ghost!
However ... The other Ana Vidovic CD on Amazon - "Guitar Recital" is just astonishing. The opening movement from Bach's Partita is just breathtaking. And having been a little negative about Torroba's 'variations on a theme' above, I have to say this collection contains a JAW-DROPPING rendition of Walton's Five Bagatelles. Julian Bream would be proud (in fact Im sure he is!) This is the album to buy if you really want to hear Vidovic's stunning talent. A wonderful album all round.
. . .Even without the Jim Redgate guitar . . .

The collaboration between Torroba and Segovia was highly productive when there was so little quality music around for classical guitar. So far as I know, Torroba did not play the guitar, in fact he wrote over 70 spanish operattas which seems to have been his major activity. However he had a wonderful gift for guitar writing, beautiful melodies and harmonies. I guess if you produce over 20 short pieces then some will be less impressive than others. If you play the guitar then you can buy the sheet music for the whole set of "castles" in a very cheap but quality book (Zen on Guitar Library with sonatina included) and this cd will give you plenty to work on. If you just like melodic guitar music then you will like this. I can't understand why some of these are not played on ClassicFM as they are just beautiful. I fully agree that Vidovic is technically superb and highly musically gifted also.

an excellent start 24 Sep 2007
By A. J. Finch - Published on Amazon.com

This is an excellent start to what, I hope, will be a recording of all of Moreno Torroba's compositions for guitar - at least, all those that have been released from Segovia's safekeeping.

The main bulk of the CD consists of two "suites" or perhaps, more accurately, two collections of pieces on a common theme. The Castles of Spain includes a couple of familiar works: "Torija" and "Romance de los Pinos" but many others which I think deserve to be better known. Similarly, The Gates of Madrid is a collection of pieces which show Moreno Torroba's gift for melody - not always immediately recognizable as "Spanish" - and his fondness for unusual harmonies and modulations which are surprisingly effective.

They are beautifully played by Ana Vidovic who is clearly a prodigy. She has been recorded on at least one previous Naxos CD though I have not yet heard it. Naxos really is to be commended for presenting so many brilliant young guitarists to the world and making it possible for us to hear so much music which has been hidden for too long. I look forward to the next volume of Moreno Torroba's music and wish Ana Vidovic the success she so clearly deserves. Ah, if only I could play like that!

Flawless technique and interpretation 23 Oct 2007

She is a wonderful guitarist. She follows the published music closely (perhaps the Jim Ferguson edition of 'Castles'?) and I have had to go back and change some of my editing decisions as a result. She is one of those few guitarists where you can forget about the instrument and just listen to the music. A very good recording in quality of sound, as well.

Bravo! 3 July 2008
By Tiago Ramos - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Ana Vidovic, once a child prodigy, now guitar virtuoso, shows the full ripeness of her art in this album dedicated to the works of the Spanish composer Frederico Moreno Torroba.
Most of the pieces are part of the traditional repertoire of the classical guitar. They were made famous, of course, by the celebrated maestro Andrés Segovia, and evoke Spanish landscapes. You can travel trough Spain without leaving your couch, with a little imagination, the pieces are very suggestive, full of imagery.
Vidovic is in great form, and proves once more that she much more than a beautiful face. Her technique is quite impressive. She doesn't exaggerate the interpretation of the most lyrical passages, and makes the pieces sound effortless, laving to the listener the sole task of appreciating the music.

A great buy, Naxos has given us some extraordinary albums in their Guitar Collection, an initiative certainly worthy of applause.

Another bravura performance! 19 Aug 2007

Ana Vidovic is rapidly becoming one of the premier guitarists performing today. For those who cannot attend a live performance, I would recommend her Mel Bay DVD.

Great composer, fantastic guitarist 25 July 2012

I must admit I had never heard of Federico Moreno Torroba but I am an avid fan of Ana Vidovic, this CD is great, the music is beautiful to listen to, Ana's playing is superb as usual, great value for money and was very pleasantly suprised, by this composers music not as "Spanishy" as I expected, great to listen to over dinner.
