3.0 out of 5 stars Harder than it looks..., 7 Aug 2006
My first impression was really positive - everything well laid out and clear. On more detailed inspection 'clear' should be removed from the description. There are highly detailed step by steps guides on how to make each of these locks. Unfortunately the details of how they work is not included. You have to piece this together from pictures and parts diagrams. After studying the description of how to build the safe in quite some detail, I still have no idea how it works - perhaps vital if I'm going to try and build one. More diagrams are needed of how the mechanisms work. Diagrams of the parts are good, it's just how they interelate that is missing and a description of what happens when you turn the key. I don't think the problems are insurmountable, just that they may require some headscratching first.

The book is American in origin and all dimensions are imperial. The recommendations on which wood to use are also geographically specific. Unlike most American books this one does not assume you have a large bandsaw, table saw and router to hand. All but one of the locks do seem to be capable of being built with handtools alone. The screwkey lock is going to require some fairly advanced (screw cutting) use of a lathe.

Mostly a good book on an intriguing subject but I am concerned that I will get halfway through one of the builds and then give up out of confusion.
