Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

More Than A Woman is the sixth album from sophisticated R & B singer Toni Braxton. Whether she's writing about her own anguish or interpreting someone else's, Braxton has a way of cutting straight to the soul. It's why her signature hit "Un-Break my Heart" was a smash, and why More Than a Woman is such a terrific album: she's angry, and she's skilled enough in R & B soul to exorcise those demons. The soaring and sassy he-done-me-wrong lament "Lies, Lies, Lies"--its chorus powered by thickly layered vocals--is utterly irresistible. "Give It Back" similarly scolds a cad caught stepping out on our gal. Braxton also finds success in happiness: the lilting, Spanish-flavoured "Me & My Boyfriend" is a joyful ode to being together, while the swooning, synth-juiced "Tell Me"--despite its soft, innocuous exterior--finds Braxton seducing a lover by checking off her attributes (hard body, wearing a thong) while offering a private dance. Braxton's husky voice continues to make hairs stand on end, and while More Than a Woman doesn't find her busting down doors stylistically, loyalists will find plenty to praise. --Kim Hughes

BBC Review

Long before the likes of J-Lo and Britney Spears hypnotised the world with their frequently photographed rumps and midriffs, Toni Braxton spearheaded the cluster of desirable females with a knockout combination of seductive looks, silky vocal tones and an inclination towards dresses which seemed to be produced during a cloth shortage. But image aside, Braxton's career CV can't be laughed at. With six Grammys, seven American Music Awards and a total of 25 million worldwide album sales, record company bosses will be relying upon her to deliver the goods with her latest offering.

More Than A Woman is a diverse blend of danceable club numbers, trademark Braxton ballads and experimental tracks which borrow from the genres of rock and jazz.

First off is the feisty "Let Me Show You The Way (Out)". A new woman's anthem for 2003? I truly think so. Over a hammering hip-hop bassline, angry incessant piano chords and Braxton's calm but commanding vocals lies a telling tale of infidelity, which sets the theme for the majority of the album. Nothing demonstrates this so magically as "Hit The Freeway". What at first sounds like a quintessential Neptunes track - melodic synthesiser, staged handclaps and funky drum patterns - later transpires into an impressive slice of pop R&B. The chorus: "Farewell my lonely one, nothing else here can be done, I don't ever wanna see you again" is eagerly contagious. Revenge has never sounded sweeter.

For your dosage of classic love songs, turn to the elegant "Always". Harking back to the Toni of yesteryear, this is a tenderly honed R&B ballad with rich, multi-layered vocals, which add balance to the edgier, street-orientated tracks.

The album's surprise comes courtesy of Braxton's hubby, Keri Lewis who produced the standout track "Lies, Lies, Lies". The most notable element on this record is the usage of live instrumentation. Toni's vocals also provide an interesting mix, as her gravelly tones are pit against an electric guitar.

There's no doubt that More Than A Woman will sell bucket-loads. At age 34 Braxton is in a great position to serve both middle-of-the-road listeners with her high-powered ballads, as well the comrades of the streets with her attitude-ridden take on modern day living. --Keysha Davis

This album is a changed in direction for Toni although it's not a radical change she is still sticking to her soulful roots. This is more hip hop orientated, there are less love ballads like her previous albums & more sassy tracks. Her voice sounds huskier than usual but that does not mean it is bad or does it have a reflection on the quality of the songs.
The tracklisting is:
1)Let Me Show You The Way(Out) (9/10): The best track on the album that contains a Curtis Mayfield sample & is produced by No I.D. It is a hip hop flavoured song about a woman kicking out her cheating man.
2)Give It Back (6/10): Produced by Manny Fresh who also raps on the song is about a couple going their separate ways. It is more RnB that the previous song.
3)A Better Man (7/10): Another song about a woman leaving her cheating man, this song is slow but blends nicely into the next song.
4)Hit The Freeway (9/10): The second best song on the album produced by The Neptunes featuring Loon. It is an uptempo RnB song again about a relationship gone bad.
5)Lies Lies Lies (8.5/10): Written & produced by her husband Keri Lewis & his strongest song on the album. It is a rock sounding RnB midtempo song probably a future single.
6)Rock Me, Roll Me (5/10): An averaged ballad about treating a woman the way she wants to be treated.
7)Selfish (5/10): Produced by Brandy's husband Robert Smith, a ballad that is not as good as the rest of the songs on the album.
8)Do You Remember When (7/10): Written & produced by Rodney Jerkins it is an uptempo love song with a classic soul feel to it.
9)Me & My Boyfriend (8.5/10): This song based on "Me & My Girlfriend", by Makaveli also the same as Jay-z & Beyonce's, "'03 Bonnie & Clyde". Which caused a controversy in the states these two songs are not unlike but Toni's version is good.
10)Tell Me (5.5/10): A RnB song with an 80's feel to it. It is quite average.
11)And I Love You (8/10): The only song written by her long time writer Babyface, this is the best ballad on the album & the most reminiscent of the previous albums.
12)Always (5/10): A ballad to end the album but it's not her best, maybe this could have been left out.
All in all i give this album 8/10, every Toni Braxton should buy it also fans who never bought her albums but like soulful music should buy it you probably won't be disappointed.

Toni's still on top. 26 Jan 2003
By Simon
Format:Audio CD
... Whilst More Than A Woman is less obvious than The Heat & Secrets, it has great potential. I remember buying The Heat and thinking oh dear, but it grew into an passionate and strong album. So, on hearing this and thinking uh-oh, Toni's lost the plot, I thought I should give it a while.
And boy was I glad I did. I can't get enough of it. It's a lot darker and a more subtle angle on the female R&B scene. But she manages to sink her teeth into some real funky beats with the help of Neptunes (Hit The Freeway the obvious single) and catch some great grooves on Give It Back and Let Me Show You The Way (out). Her effortless voice seduces sedcutively from the speakers n Me & My Boyfriend, and whilst laying down the law on Lies Lies Lies and Selfish, she masters a deep soul that a lot of people can only dream of.
My advice - buy this CD and give Toni a chance to prove she's most certainly still ahead of the game.
