Steve Harley is one of the UK's finest rock / pop musicians of the late 70s and early 80s. This collection is representative of some, but not by any means all, of his finest works. If I have a criticism, it tends to focus on the more commercial tracks (as you would expect from a "best of") at the neglect of some excellent material which remains hidden on the other albums. However, if you just want a sampler then this is a great place to start.
Most people will know the hit singles, Mr Soft, Make Me Smile, Judy Teen and the excellent cover of the Beatles "Here Comes The Sun". What many will have missed will be the fabulous "The Psychomodo", "Sebastian" the bouncy "That's my life in your hands" and the real highlight "the best years of our lives" which is the title track from Cockney Rebel's finest album.
The musicianship is excellent, and Harley's often quirky delivery makes these tracks stand out from the pop rubbish that was prevalent when this was first released.
Buy this by all means, then buy "the best years of our lives".
