When Richard Slater receives a letter of complaint from one of his constituents, a Margaret Hayton, he merely responds with his standard letter of empty promises. Clearly, this woman is insane and must be avoided at all costs. But she will not be dismissed so easily, and when Richard finally sets eyes on the ‘twenty-something vision in stone-washed denim, with a cloud of dark ringlets and huge, serious eyes’ he risks losing his heart, his head and quite possibly his political career.



About the Author

Rosy Thornton grew up in Ipswich and studied law at Cambridge University. She stayed on to do a Ph.D. and has been a lecturer there ever since. In 1996, she was awarded the Cambridge University Pilkington Teaching Prize. Following the BBC’s adaptation of North and South, Rosy Thornton decided to try her hand at writing fiction. The result is this marvellously accomplished first novel. Rosy lives in a village near Cambridge with her husband, their two daughters and a springer spaniel called Treacle.

Rosy Thornton is a comic genius! Her Margaret Hayton is a cleverer and more compelling version of Bridget Jones, surrounded by a diverse and well-drawn cast of characters (in all senses of the word) who take on various issues of the day, be they large, small or imaginary. Each of the characters has a distinct and fully developed voice, allowing the reader real insight into the different personalities. Full of lovely, witty throw-away lines and unexpected plot twists, 'More Than Love Letters' is more than a debut novel -- it's the work of an accomplished, inspired and original writer with a great future in front of her. Warning: this book may have you laughing out loud (and perhaps shedding a tear) so it might be best not to read it in public. It was completely unlike any other 'chick lit' I have ever read, by turns satirical yet warm-hearted, serious and also farcical in the best and original sense of the word. The central story focuses on the unlikely, yet touching, romance between an MP and a young woman called Margaret. The story also tackles issues, great and small, from homelessness and asylum seekers to dog fouling and unfair taxes. Give it a go if your reading palate is jaded - if this book doesn't revive your tastebuds, nothing will!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. A very sweet, funny story and an unusual pairing of an MP and one of his constituants. Both characters were very absorbing and Rosy Thornton cleverly brings you into thier world through written communication - demonstrating various age-differences through either letter or email writing. Would reccommend it to anyone - would be a particularly good holiday read as one can get through it in about 2 days! Some bits have you laughing out loud - a very touching love-story.
