A Change of Direction 12 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
For some inexplicable reason Rick jettisoned his regular band in late 1959 to record a selection of songs that were totally different to his two previous rockabilly albums Ricky Sings Again and Songs By Ricky. With saxophones, strings and plenty of standards More Songs seems like an attempt to compete with the trend towards a more mainstream pop style favoured by the likes of Bobby Darin and Bobby Rydell. Although there are some pleasant moments - I'm Not Afraid, Make Belief and Proving My Love plus a rocking Hey Pretty Baby - there are too many big band type numbers and the whole project is uneven. By the following year his band was back with Joe Osborne replacing James Kirkland on bass and Rick's sound a little smoother and more laid back. Rick is 21 begins to establish the template that Rick would follow in the first half of the 1960s. Plenty of quality songs some rockers, some with a country flavour and the occasional standard. Standout tracks apart from the hits are Everybody But Me, Break My Chain and My One Desire. The highlight of the single tracks on this package is a blistering Milk Cow Blues recorded in late 1960 after Burton's return. Rick sounds much more comfortable in this setting.

As a fan of Ricky Nelson since I was a teenager (a long time ago) I already have both original Imperial albums on mono vinyl, both in near mint condition. This joint CD containing all the original tracks plus bonus tracks is a real treasure house for any Nelson devotee. The songs have been superbly digitally remastered and this collection just blows the vinyl albums away with their clarity and full spectrum richness. I am hearing musical phrases on some tracks that I never heard before, and - most tracks are in the full stereo of the era, perhaps not entirely up to today's standards but giving new life and feeling to both albums, and illustrate the exacting standards that Ricky felt was necessary in all of his recordings, making him a legend in the USA.
A must for fans of the rock'n'roll era!

Basically this Cd continues the format of the Imperial reissue programme for Ricks CD's. Once again two albums in this case his 5th & 6th are coupled together on one CD and digitally remastered. Original sleeve notes are included as well as additional commentory by the actor James Ritz who reviews both albums in question. However on this occasion outtakes are not includes. A and B sides realeased at the time of these albums are.

' More songs by Ricky '(1960) is argubally his most contraversial record for the Imperial label. Having made some outstanding rock and roll records of the previous decade Ricky does the unthinkable both in some critics and fans eyes and makes an album containg standards, featuring female back up singers and using strings was not what people expected on a album by Ricky Nelson.

However rock and roll was not the only type of music around and Ricky was keen to explore new sounds. Now seen as a experimental record there is some great material here. The lack of James Burton guitar playing is a disappointment however. He only features on one track ' Make Believe '. The singles released around this time were only moderate hits. It took a year before he came back big.

Travelin Man & Hello Mary Lou both from ' Rick is 21 '(1961) were the hit single Rick needed to revitalise his carrier. So famous were these songs that they kind of overshadow the album from which they come from. However the album did make the top 10 (No8) and Rick had a hit single and album to promote. Highlights of the album include Do you know what it means to Miss New Orleans which was also featured in a Rick film of the time ' The Wackiest Ship in the Army ' and ' Lucky star ' which saw Ricky touching on country. Most important of all James Burton is back on guitar.
