Product Description

CD Description

· When people reminisce now on Brand 80s, they are presented with a glitzy, money-pumped Club Tropicana. Well, think again. The Godfathers, who were indeed signed to the same label, Epic, as Club Tropicana author George Michael himself, presented hard, crunching, socially-conscious pop with a fierce R&B/mod sensibility. Their three albums for Epic, Birth, School, Work, Death, More Songs About Love and Hate and Unreal World, all offered a powerful antidote to the puffed-up importance of the music scene.

· By the time the Godfathers released More Songs About Love and Hate, they were making waves in America while still seeking chart action back in their home country. They had become the name to drop. Formed from the ashes of the Sid Presley Experience in 1985, the band - brothers vocalist Peter and bassist Chris Coyne, guitarists Kris Dollimore and Mike Gibson and drummer George Mazur, had enjoyed considerable success with the compilation of their indie hits, Hit By Hit (on their Corporate Image label) and their first Epic album More Songs About Love & Hate was released on 9 May 1989. The cover of the album had a stunning drawing of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on it that had to be withdrawn for the American market, amidst fears that the actress would sue. Peter Coyne explained: "It wasn't meant to denigrate Elizabeth Taylor or Richard Burton's memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars R & B 13 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
More top quality R & B on this re-issue. Included the most excellent extended version of "Birth, School, Work, Death" inexplicably not included on the re-issue of "Birth, School, Work Death".

5.0 out of 5 stars Back there 16 May 2012
By Koen
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I used to love this record very much when it was released for the first time, years ago. Even more than 'Birth, School etc', which was great. I didnt' listen to it for years, but now, I don't know why, it's back.
Well, it's as good as ever. Pure rock, intense, raw, good songs, timeless. What more can I say?

5.0 out of 5 stars An under-rated classic 20 April 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A minor classic from one of Britain's great under-rated bands. This album -- if memory serves -- was actually very well-reviewed at the time of release but somehow failed to impact on the public in any meaningful way, which is a crying shame. It's hard to pigeonhole "More Songs...", which might be part of the problem: somewhere between a punk attitude, straight-up rock 'n' roll and R&B when that actually meant 'rhythm and blues', "More Songs..." hits that crucial criterion for a classic album: no filler. There's not an ounce of fat here, just some damn fine songs about love and hate. The thing is, for all the studied cynicism, there's an undeniable yearning for the romantic in the song-writing, so perhaps the songs are more about love than they are about hate. What's for certain is that you'll get an album full of damn fine tunes, coupled with wickedly sharp lyrics, that still deserves a far greater audience than have heard it to date.
