3.0 out of 5 stars Tribute suits the album, 30 July 2006
This review is from: More Oar (Audio CD)
Its a tough job turning such a diverse album into a tribute that works. However, since the songs on Oar often sound like unfinished sketches of songs, its nice to see what such a varied bunch of musos do with them. Little Hands is one of Robert Plant's more controlled performances - its whispered delivery suits the themes of the song nicely. Elsewhere, Book of Moses is such a good song for Tom Waits, it is almost impossible to believe he didn't write it. Some songs won't be for everyone - the Ophelias do what they can with Lawrence of Euphoria, which again suits their oddball charm. But you do feel that some of the bands get a raw deal in the carve up of songs, as Oar has always contained some clunkers. Overall, it doesn't really gel into a great album, or reflect the fragile genius of Skippy's album.

3.0 out of 5 stars 'More Oar: A Tribute To Alexander 'Skip' Spence' (Birdman) Various Artists, 16 July 2008
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: More Oar (Audio CD)
As for tribute albums, 'More Oar' is decent. Problem is that many of these songs are likely unfamiliar to most fans unless they were like a Moby Grape / Skip Spence die-hard. However, there are plenty of good songs here for you listening pleasure - like Robert Plant's "Little Hands", Mudhoney with their *ss-kicking contribution of "War In Peace" {possibly the best track altogether}, Robyn Hitchcock's "Broken Heart", {here's one I didn't expect} - Flying Saucer Attack, paying their respect with "Grey-Afro" and Beck putting his best foot forward with "Halo Of Gold". Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was good, 23 Aug 2001

It was a good CD, there is not much else to say. Not all of the songs were recognizeable, amazing, life-altering songs, but i enjoyed listening to this CD
