This is Moondog at his most direct, original, fresh, playful and let-it-be-said unpretentious — featuring the Honking Geese, Tony Schwartz's brilliant outdoors recordings (particularly improved in Honest Jon's new version), with interventions from a ship's foghorn, a tapdancer and a cocker spaniel, and signature rhythms for trimba, oo, tuji, yukh, and ostrich feathers. Andy Warhol's mother got it straight, on the original Prestige cover of Story — 'Moondog is a poet who versifies in sound, a diarist overcome by love, curiosity and amusement by everything that reaches his ears, all of which he transposes into a symphony of himself. world music from a world of Moondog's own

This music is sectioned under jazz, but it's so unique that it feels strange to me that it be called jazz. Most of the music is polyrhythmic percussion, including woodwinds & strings. There's also some classical instrumentation & some fun piano music. One of the 2 instruments in the first song on the cd is a blowing boat. In one of my favorite parts of this cd, Moondog is arguing with a little dog & starting by saying, "That's mine, you can't have it." A few minutes later, though, I think the little dog gets to have it.

If this is your first introduction to Moondog, you won't be disappointed. He's a percussionist, as far as I can tell, using all sorts of sounds from the streets of NYC. It's not jazz really, or orchestration, although it can be compared to both. It is clean, quiet, percussion more than anything else. One voice with no eyes. Dig it.
