Book Description

23 Feb 2012 Classic BBC Comedy
This title is presented on 2CDs. Join Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick and Joan Sims as they go beyond "Round the Horne", "Stop Messing About" - the first all-nude radio show. Nervous listeners are advised to keep their eyes closed ...and it's forbidden to take photographs. Taking over the mantle of "Round the Horne", "Stop Messing About" carried on the comedy tradition, which reunited Kenneth Williams with both Hugh Paddick and Kenneth's "Carry On" co-star, Joan Sims. These four episodes include such favourites as crusty old judge Sir Inigo Parchmutter, "Crackerjackanory With Mother", more visits to Tolpurgis Hall, as well as a couple who bear a bona similarity to Julian and Sandy. With much vada-ing and some wonderful film adaptations, such as "A Fistful of Denaro" and "Oliver Stick", "Stop Messing About" is packed with outrageously funny sketches, parodies, double entendres and saucy songs.

Stop Messing About was the successor to Round The Horne. Following the untimely death of Horne, Kenneth Williams was promoted from sideman to star, and scripts for a planned 5th season of RTH recycled for the new cast. Joining in the fun was Joan Sims (replacing Betty Marsden in a move arranged before Horne's death) and Hugh Paddick, along with ever loyal announcer Douglas Smith.

The humour is essentially more of the same from RTH, just a bit smuttier. The loss of Horne is keenly felt, the cast needed a straight man to play off effectively. If one looks at it in isolation from RTH then it is an OK comedy from the early seventies, but under it's predecessors shadow it does pale.

These discs presents four episodes from the first series:

Series 1 Episode 5 (first transmitted 4th May 1969 and featuring `Oliver Stick')
Series 1 Episode 6 (first transmitted 11th May 1969 and featuring `Fanny Girl').
Series 1 Episode 7 (first transmitted 18th May 1969 and featuring `A Fist Full of Dinaro')
Series 1 Episode 8 (first transmitted 25th May 1969 and featuring `the fear of cabinets').

Two episodes per disc, two discs in a fold out jewel case. The remastering is OK, but there are almost no liner notes, merely broadcast dates. Poor even by the BBC's lamentable standars in this department. I have no idea if these are original recordings or from the Transcription service archive.

4 stars for the show, 4 for the CD production, 1 for the liner notes. Summing up I think 3 stars is fair.

The range of characters is reduced from the days of Round The Horne, but Kenneth Williams in in his usual / unusual best form.
