Book Description

18 Oct 2004
A cupcake can change your life. Ever since Magnolia Bakery opened its doors in 1996, people have been lining up day and night to satisfy their sugar cravings -- patiently waiting in line at the old-fashioned yet funky bake shop to buy cupcakes, layer cakes, pudding, and ice cream, much to the surprise and delight of owner Allysa Torey. Now, from the baker who brought cupcakes to everyone's attention, come even more recipes from Greenwich Village's favorite bakery and her home kitchen.

Whether it's a birthday cake, weekend breakfast treats, or sweets for a bake sale, you'll find simple and delicious recipes to delight family and friends on all occasions in "More from Magnolia: Recipes from the World-Famous Bakery and Allysa Torey's Home Kitchen." Beginning with the ever-popular cupcakes and frostings, you'll find the much-requested recipes for the mouthwatering Magnolia's Famous Banana Pudding and sinfully rich Red Velvet Cake with Creamy Vanilla Frosting, all with helpful hints that let you achieve the same sweet results as the bakery. In the well-loved Magnolia style, Allysa Torey brings you new twists on old favorites, such as Devil's Food Cupcakes with Caramel Frosting, Peaches and Cream Pie with Sugar Cookie Crust, and Apple Tart with Hazelnut Brown Sugar Topping. You'll also find breakfast treats like Cream Cheese Crumb Buns and Blueberry Coffee Cake with Vanilla Glaze; and afternoon snacks like Black Bottom Cupcakes, Walnut Brown Sugar Squares, and Oatmeal Peanut Butter Chip Cookies. From Banana Cake with White Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing to Heavenly Hash Ice Cream Pie, these are the desserts that Allysa makes for friends and family at home -- unfussy, straightforward, and simply delicious.

Illustrated with eight pages of beautiful color photographs, as well as black-and-white stills that capture the daily life of the bakery, "More from Magnolia" is an irresistible collection of new classics that will inspire you to fill your kitchen with sweet things.

1.0 out of 5 stars Expected much more 14 Oct 2008
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book gets a one star rating because I expected much more from this book. There are only 8 pages of colour photos, and the rest are black and white. I like to see a picture of each recipe in colour so I know what the final product should look like but not all the recipes include a picture in fact very few do. Also, if you are looking for secrets regarding their infamous cupcakes you can get the recipe for the cupcake and frosting online for free. So don't bother buying the book if that is your sole reason for making the purchase. The delicious looking cover tempts you but there isn't anything special inside the pages. I would pass this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Cannot go wrong with this book! 7 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
I was given this as a present and was disapointed by the presentation- there are very few images. But decided to give the recipes a go anyway. Each cake that I have made has turned out perfectly and they are to die for. The spiced apple cake, blue berry cake ( the icing tastes like liquid icecream mmm) and carrot cake last about two minutes in my house they are that good. I made the the red velvet cake for a birthday and although the photo is horribly garish, my version of the cake was stunning! So if you love great cakes and like the idea of a great surprise as you open the oven this book is definately for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book 12 Dec 2008

Lovely book and great cakes. The toppings are too much and too sweet (and I have a sweet tooth) so make half mixture described.

I really like this book. Love that it tells the story behind the bakery. Not many illustrations or pictures but its all about the recipes anyway! So just going to try some out, nice book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Repeat Recipes 4 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I had this on my wish list and was given a copy for Xmas. It was on my wish list because I had Magnolia: Recipes from the World Famous Bakery and thought "fantastic - more super recipes". Couldn't have been more wrong as More from Magnolia is almost all taken from the other book with only a few different recipes. An absolute waste of money for the person who gave it to me and so disappointing as I was very excited about this. Do not buy this if you have another Magnolia cookbook already.

Nice book. I found many useful recipes. I would prefer some more pictures for every recipe separately. Measurement in metric system is useful as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT devils food cake recipe! 30 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
I wanted to add my thoughts here after reading some of the other reviews. I too was also disappointed at the lack of colour pictures in the book as some of the other reviewers have mentioned. I love to see lots of pictures in cookbooks because I feel it gives one inspiration. Becuase of this, I cannot give the book 5 stars, and if you are looking for a book with lots of eye candy to look at, this is certainly not the book for you.

The first recipe I tried was the famous vanilla cupcakes. I bought this book specifically for this recipe to try re-create the wonderful cakes I had in New York, after an absolutely horrid attempt using a recipe found online. ALthough the recipe in this book was different, it still comes nowhere close to anything that could ever grace the shelves in Magnolia's.... the cakes went really hard on the top pretty much straight out the oven and they were very heavy. Having said that, I haven't given up on the book completely and yesterday I make the devil's food cupcakes. I made my own icing to go on them as I find the frosting recipes in this book to be extremely sweet (In fact, I am sure that perhaps the icing sugar they get in US must be less sweet than the kind we get here in the UK - as mad as that sounds, it is the only thing I can think of that makes it okay to use that amount of sugar in a recipe..) But the cakes were delicious! They were rich, light and so soft. Honestly, this recipe for the devils food cupcakes is amazing!!! They stayed soft on the top, even the morning after, they were still completely soft. I am so impressed with how these turned out that I feel that it made getting the book worth it, if only for that recipe! This comes really close to the ones I had in NY, and I dare say this..
