Product Description

Have you ever thought about making a new life abroad?

"Dreams can come true!"

"Fantastic, hilarious, painful. Completely un-put-downable. Probably the best book I have read this millenium!"

"If you buy one book this year... get this!"

"Brilliant book... very funny..."

"It was while holding aloft a not altogether pleasant-smelling mackerel that the decision was made. The March rain hammered on the rotting tin roof high above the market stall, where I had spent the last six months pushing out dubious trays of marine life at three for a fiver. After a two-week holiday in Tenerife, one of Spain's Canary Islands, Joy and I vowed that a life in fish giblets was not going to be our destiny and a life in the sun, was.

A complete lack of catering experience, zero business acumen and the sum of our vastly wealth barely reaching waist level of a ceramic pig did little to deter our enthusiasm. “Where do we sign?” we replied. And then the whole silly, sunny saga began..." Joe Cawley

When Joe and his girlfriend Joy decide to trade in their life on a cold Lancashire fish market to run a bar in the Tenerife sunshine, they anticipate a paradise of sea, sand and siestas. Little did they expect their foreign fantasy to turn out to be about as exotic as a wet Monday morning.

Amidst a host of eccentric locals, homesickness and the occasional cockroach infestation, pint-pulling novices Joe and Joy struggle with the expat culture and learn that, although the skies might be bluer, the grass is definitely not always greener.

An hilarious travelogue exposing the wild and wacky characters of an expat community in a familiar holiday destination, More Ketchup than Salsa is full of humor and is a must-read travel memoir for anybody who has ever dreamed about moving abroad, finding a job overseas or even momentarily flirted with the idea of 'doing a Shirley Valentine' in these trying economic times.

More Ketchup than Salsa - a funny travel memoir like no other!

  • "Dreams can come true"
  • "Great book! A real page-turning real life read!"
  • "A book full of laughter and tears."
  • "Joe's travel writing in itself is of a very high standard - descriptive, funny, observant."
  • "...by far the best book I have read in years"

˃˃˃ "One of those 'Just one more chapter then I'll turn the light out' books... before you know it the sun is rising! Couldn't put it down!"

4.0 out of 5 stars True to life 1 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a great book that portrays Tenerife in a tourist resort in the 1990's. The story shows how two couples struggle to make a go of a bar in the outskirts of the tourist centre.
I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking of moving to Spain to open a bar as it portrays more then the paperwork required. It charts their up and down struggle to adapt to living awa form home.
It is funny and sad in places and I really enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams can come true 6 Aug 2006
Format:Paperback
If you're going on holiday to Tenerife,or have been,or in fact if you've ever dreamt of living and working abroad...I'd highly recommend this book.Joe Cawley writes with such a wry sense of humour. I had tears of laughter running down my face and laughed out loud from start to finish. I just could not put it down.

I enjoyed reading about all the things that I was familiar with on Tenerife and that together with Joe Cawley's hilarious descriptions of the characters and situations helped to cheer up some wet, dreary days in the U.K.

Had it confirmed that dreams can come true....depending on how you look at things,I suppose...So long as you're willing to put in the long hours and extremely hard graft and also accept the emotional/financial consequences, and perhaps be able to laugh, eventually, at the not so good experiences.

Look forward to the sequel and anyhting else that may come out of this fantastic book...Film,T.V.etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great read 6 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I would thoroughly recommend this book if you enjoy a good laugh and an insight into the ups and downs of leaving Britain to live and work on a paradise island. Joe Cawley describes the challenges of running a bar in Tenerife whilst telling hilarious anecdotes about the British ex-pats and holiday makers. This book brightened up a cold Scottish winter and I can't wait for a sequel.

After hearing about this book on a tenerife web site I decided to order it from you.

I'm so glad I did cause it just took be straight back to tenerife with all the desciptions of things and it was really interesting to read about all the dificulties of running a business in Tenerife. I can't wait for the next book to see how Joe and everyone gets on.

A wonderful holiday read for any weather. It will augment a sunny vacation or warm you on a wintry break. Witty descriptions and a clever pace which brought me to the end too quickly. Hoping there will be a follow up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hola lotta fun 31 Mar 2013

I don't fancy a drink or especially anything to eat in your bar, Mr Cawley but found your book very entertaining. I like your style of writing and enjoyed reading of your trials and tribulations.

5.0 out of 5 stars not safe to read in public... 21 Jun 2006
By mandia
Format:Paperback
A great read, the author has achieved not just the success of running a bar abroad, but also that rare commodity that is a tale that makes you chuckle out loud. There is as much of the characters who inhabit the bar as there is of the owners and it is hard not to read without a knowing nod to some of their foibles. A fun holiday read, but there will be some who cringe as Cawley throws a sharp light on British holiday habits, and the people that turn them into a way of life.
