Biography

Spanning 15 years, the recording career of RJD2 (aka RJ Krohn) is starting to exhibit the type of resilience generally reserved for golfers and bebop musicians. The relevance of this should not go unnoticed; it is increasingly rare for artists in the sphere of hip-hop and electronic music to maintain a presence this far into a career. This feat becomes even more impressive considering it was ... Read more in Amazon's RJD2 Store

cannot fault the guy...albums in the past have afforded him the opportunity to "experiment", no major disasters, but he is right back on form with this lp.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic RJD2 vibe with some interesting new sampling efforts 8 Oct 2013

First, I should state that I have Deadringer, In Rare Form, Loose Ends, Since Last We Spoke, and even the Unlimited EP (Soul Position) releases from RJD2 -- I have been a fan for years. If you are reading this, you know he's an incredible producer and rarely releases anything that isn't of a high caliber.

More Is Than Isn't is another very solid release from RJD2. It has elements that remind me of many of his past works, but also weaves a variety of emotions expressed throughout the tracks to keep it interesting. Some tracks are more ambient and chill than others, some are retro funky, some are upbeat and positive, but none feel out of place as a whole. If you are a fan of RJD2's work, I'm betting you will dig this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The RJ I fell in love with is back 12 Oct 2013
By Mike B - Published on Amazon.com

I've been a fan of RJ's since his Def Jux days, Deadringer, The Horror, and Since we Last Spoke are classics. He went off the rails a bit with The Third Hand which expanded on the pop heavy sounds of SWLS, The Colossus was an entirely different sound and his weakest release to date. More is Than Isn't though is a return to true form, this record harks back to those Def Jux days and has the sound of the classics Deadringer and The Horror. If you were a fan of those classic records this is a must get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth writing home about 30 July 2014
By James D. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
As a "casual" fan of RJD2 (A few songs of his are constantly on my shuffle playlist), I typically don't feel very disappointed if I don't find many songs on a new RJD2 album that "click" with me. For some reason I thought that this CD would be disappointing, but after I gave this album a few listens, I am a believer. All of the songs sound different and distinct, and a few were downright surprising ("Milk Tooth" sounds like a track you would hear on a remake "The Legend of the Mystical Ninja" for Nintendo 64). I am happy with the direction that RJD2 is going, I eagerly await where he takes me to with his next album.
5.0 out of 5 stars Experimental hip-hop? 25 Jan 2014

I am not a fan of genre definitions. I think music can be put into a category that is unsuitable that then excludes people. A friend told me that RJD2 is experimental hip-hop. Not even sure what that means. What I hear are some excellent and highly varied beat structures that go to create a wide variety of toe-tapping songs that have an electronic edge. Temperamental and Her Majesty's Socialist Request are great examples. Bathwater, on the other hand, is a serious hip-hop track which doesn't quite work for me. I am relatively new to electronic music having grown up mostly listening to rock, pop and indie styles. I love fusions such as jazz/rock, jazz/folk. This album represents a noticeably different style, possibly even unique, that is excellent. I feel that it connects with EDM, hip-hop, jazz and rock/pop. And yet it manages to stand apart and provide a refreshing change in a market where there is a lot of copycat repetition. I first heard the track Ghostwriter and wanted to hear if that was a one-hit wonder or if RJD2 is the real deal. Well, he is the very real deal. Listen and love
3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag 14 Jan 2014

I'm not an aficionado, but I always liked RJD2's instrumentals (Iced Lightning, Ghostwriter) more than the tracks with vocals. I'd say this album continues that trend. Some very good songs here, but some that I skip as soon as I hear them.
