4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 13 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD
SubRosa is a very interesting band consisting of three women, one on guitar, two on vocals & electric violins backed by two guys on bass and drums. 'More Constant Than The Gods' has been named in many rock magazines in their top twenty sludge doom post rock albums of 2013. It certainly deserves to be there as it exhibits some very good song writing, power drums, guitar work and crazy violin sounds that certainly creates interest in the first half of the album. The Usher and Ghosts of a Dead Empire are near perfect executions of doom.

It does however suffer in keeping up this momentum as there are only so many weird and wonderful violin and guitar solos you can get away with on one release. This is perhaps highlighted with Affliction which is rather a lacklustre track that leads into the final track on the album. With no drums and stripped out guitar it relies on piano and string instruments but feels like it should be more on a folk album then presented here. SubRosa are at their best when they blend these elements not separate them and the separation is just a tad too far on No Safe Harbor. I just feel if SubRosa started using the odd synth here and there it may give them a little more sonic dynamic and a greater musical palette to play with when they experiment.

I make it sound all bad but it is not because even the latter part is not bad and the first part of this album is doom rock as its best. Certainly worth parting with your money to buy. It's a pity Amazon UK or US are not selling the limited edition vinyl version (if you still can get a copy) as it is very expensive to import from the US. It means you are limited to the digital download or the CD. You can listen to the whole album on the band's bandcamp page before deciding to buy which is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUBROSA - MORE CONSTANT THAN THE GODS 20 Mar 2014

There just aren't the words. Crushing, haunting doom, with a punkish melody to the female vocal, and the dual violins adding a mournful quality to the power. 'Cosey Mo' is THE metal tune of 2013, and its chorus and agonised bridges will haunt you forever. You must do. You have to.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 2013 25 Dec 2013

Well this album took me by surprise after discovering it on emusic. I have enjoyed some bands on profound lore, in particular VHOL so thought I would check out some more on the label. I have to say this has blown me away. It is perhaps the most original thing I have encountered this year. This can best be described as a heavy, beautiful, multi layered masterpiece. It is captivating on first listen, but you begin to appreciate it after several listens. The twin violins certainly add another dimension to this music. One of my favourite albums of 2013.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - five stars 7 Dec 2013
Format:Audio CD
I love checking out the end of year lists on metal websites/magazines, because there's always one or two releases that sneak by me during the year for me to catch up on. This year, Subrosa's 'More Constant than the Gods' is that album.

It's superb, highly inventive doom rock. Just when you think you've heard it all before, something comes along to really impress, and this album impresses on a number of levels. First rate inventive song writing, female dual vocals and violins with a massive guitar tone and solid rhythm section deliver something really unique.

Highly enjoyable, very recommendable, and with plenty of replay value.

I expect the vinyl version will be released early 2014...
