Product Description

When Moonbse is threatened with closure by technology-hating factions on Earth, its leader Douglas Stavenger - who cannot return to Earth except to die - vows to save the colony which has been his life's work and his father's dream.  But if Moonbase uses violence to defend itself, their cause will be lost as  surely as if it were destroyed.

Only an audacious, nearly impossible combination of military defence and political wisdom can save them.

This is the sequel to moonrise. Having read moonrise the continual back referencing was tedious but useful to those just reading this book alone. The story as before is loaded with political substories, but the actoin is better paced in this book than the first. If you have read Moonrise then read this to give you some pleasure from all you hard work. But if you want to just read one Ben Bova book try Mars, Colony or the Voyager series.

Moonwar jumps right in to the action, following on from the scenario laid out in Moonrise. Once again Douglas Stavenger, the man in symbiosis with nanobots, is protecting his father's dream, now his own, of a sustainable colony upon the moon. Bova weaves a tale of a political as well as conventional warfare, with Moonbase on the short end of the stick. As Doug tries to rally support the scientists upon the moon must create a way to prevent disaster, without any weapons at their disposal. A clever story, entwined with treachery and betrayal, continues to deliver the action right until the end. There are some leaps of faith required along the way as Bova puts his hero through the motions and there are a few plot elements that will raise an eyebrow in bewilderment, yet on the whole Moonwar in inventive in the right ways and for all the right reasons. An enjoyable sci-fi blast and a decent entry in the Grand Tour series.

This book is an absolutely magnificent masterpiece, Bova's incredible skill for writing is truly reflected in this epic novel based on a foundation of political war and believable technology. The author has created a very accurate portrait of what life on the moon would be like and his evocative style combined with the dramatic essence of the story, help to build an enthralling and captivating novel that's sure to keep even the most critical SF fanatacists on the edge of their seats until the classic cliche of a 'lived happily ever after' ending.
