Product Description

A witty, charming romantic comedy from the author of Clouds Among the Stars.

Roberta is appalled to have to abandon her perfect life in London to return to the family home and look after her mother, who has taken breaking her hip as a sign to stay in bed all day reading romance novels. Her involvement with a married polititian may have been a direct consequence of this.

When the inevitable scandal breaks, Roberta flees – and accepts a job as housekeeper to an eccentric family, and is summoned to their family home – an enormous castle in the Irish countryside.

Arriving in Ireland, Roberta takes a hair-raising pony and trap ride in the driving rain to reach her destination: Curraghcourt. It is a grand and imposing castle, although it has fallen into a state of bad disrepair. And when she meets the family, Roberta begins to understand why.

The owner’s wife, Violet, is lying in her room in a coma. His charming but vague sister is addicted to poetry; and his mistress Sissy has a private line to the fairies. Completing the family unit are three dysfunctional children.

The novel follows Roberta's efforts to restore Curraghcourt and reform the wayward family. She quickly finds redeeming qualities in even the most infuriating characters and falls in love with the melancholy madness of the household. The wonderful cast of characters includes eccentric friends, the fiery yet sentimental neighbours, assorted hangers-on and admirers.

Victoria Clayton has written an enchanting novel, a wonderful social comedy.

Despite the fact that, for some crazy reason, Victoria Clayton's books are NOT published in the USA (won't someone rectify this?), she has become one of my favorite writers. Her characters are colorful without being self-consciously or deliberately "wacky", and her heroines are smart, self-deprecating, charming and eccentric. I've read all her books, and I've yet to be disappointed or less than charmed. "Moonshine" is just as much fun as the others, and I found myself slowing down as I reached the end... I didn't want to finish these book and leave the world Ms. Clayton had created.

Always a pleasure... can't wait for the next one.

Once I had read the first five books from VC - was delighted to find another published. My daughter (21) both enjoyed the book immensely. It was up to the usual standard.

The plot was familiar but we did not mind. Could not wait for the quirky characters, fairy tale plot plus brilliant schemes for the garden and wonderful recipes.

As someone who loves to have reading relaxation with witty writing, romance, references to well loved literature and great descriptions of people, houses, food and love - cannot wait for the next one.

Like most of Victoria Clayton's books, "Moonshine" is written with charm, wit and an original take on life, and once you have read a few chapters, you quickly know this book will be a friend for life. Clayton combines a wicked sense of the ridiculous with a warm and perceptive understanding of human nature, and the situations her characters find themselves in, although sometimes extreme, never stretch the bounds of credulity. Her books also make evident a wealth of knowledge about architecture, literature, food and history, but this knowledge is always worn lightly and woven skillfully into the tale so that you have intelligent but highly entertaining reading. Friends who I have introduced to these books have all been similarly charmed. I've read all of the Clayton books to date and would recommend this one and "Clouds Among the Stars" as her very best - her wrtiing just gets better and better. I can't wait for the next one to appear, and if you haven't read any yet then I am very jealous of you - you have a real treat in store.
