Review

'you'll interested in this remarkable debut by a most talented new writer' --The Financial Times

Product Description

As sharp and delicious as a Thai red curry, the beautifully-crafted interlinking tales of "Moonshine in the Morning" present an unforgettable cast of strong-minded women and their wayward husbands clinging to village life in Thailand before the relentless advance of modernity. How can Mother Nong and Mother Pensri save their menfolk from terrifying visions of 'widow ghosts', when Uncle Lai's moonshine stall does such brisk business? What possessed Mother Suree to cut off her husband's proudest appendage and attach it to a high-flying balloon during the festival of Loy Krathong? And is the sacred banyan tree dying because the men are taking bets on its size, or because the women are lighting too many oil lamps under its ancient boughs? Achieving both charm and authenticity, debut novelist Andrea McNicoll subtly builds up her characters and themes to create a world so distant in its geography, and yet so familiar in its intimate human drama, as to be utterly irresistible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 13 Oct 2008
By Clare A. Morrison - See all my reviews

The opening paragraph is beautifully written: it captures a Thai village slowly awakening, evoking an array of sights, sounds and movements. You feel you are there. For anyone who has been to Thailand or would like to go, this is a 'must' read. This novel transports you to another world with humour and pathos, dramatising a whole cast of characters and incidents. It is hugely entertaining as well as informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Community, somehow, 18 Oct 2008
By Mr. Alastair E. Sim (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews

I enjoyed this immensely. There's plenty of humour, and plenty of tragedy and transformation. There's a real strength in reading about a communuity in a book by someone who was so deeply immersed in that environment, and who can see it without the distorting and patronising view of the traveller who's just passing through. Ultimately, I found it a deeply affirming book - through all the infidelities, conflicts, and even corruptions a community somehow survives and thrives, like a living thing in itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars the 'real' thailand!, 14 Oct 2008
By M. Claxton "scampidad" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been to Thailand twice and this is the first book that really captured the country's essence for me. It's about the everyday lives of the people in a village in the north and the writing is understated, beautiful, funny, tender and memorable. Strongly recommended if you like reading about different cultures.
