Moonlight Sonata, Moonlight Sinatra!
What a great CD this is! Frank is in great voice. A "theme" album, those were always my favorites and what a theme it is, the moon and love.
My favorite Sinatra albums came out in the 50's, on Capital, this is from later, 1966, when most of his albums were on Reprise, but it has much in common the great saloon song fifties Sinatra. But more wistful and less sad I think. Sinatra was into the swingin' Rat Pack, "Ring-a-Ding-Ding" stuff by then but this harkens back to his more romantic and less egotistical side.
I think Nelson Riddle was Sinatra's best arranger. Riddle adds little impressionist and fantastical flourishes to accent the lyrics.
I had never before heard lyrics for "Moonlight Serenade". I think my favorites are the lesser known "Moon got in my Eyes" and "I Wished on a Moon" "Moon Song", "Moon Love" (a.k.a, Tchaikovsky's 5th) all full of summer, moonlight, beautiful women and champagne. You can see it in your mind's eye. Like you woke up the next day and you can still picture the girl with moonlight coming from her eyes! Been there!
"I guess you don't remember when the moon got in my eyes"
Lovely, romantic. Buy it! The best new Sinatra I've heard in a decade. Not a bad cut on the album. Less than 35 minutes.
I didn't hear this before the digital remix, but this mix should satisfy the most demanding audiophile. Clear, very 3-D image.
For those of us who are still romantics.
Full of stardust and moon dust and moon magic. Smooooooooooooooooth. Highest recommendation!
