Review

'Vintage stuff... another dark but absurdly enjoyable tale that's so beautifully written and so sharp in its details and atmosphere that it's no wonder Lehane's books attract filmmakers with such ease (Irish Voice )

Lehane perfectly captur[es] gloomy post-financial meltdown Boston. Fortunately, he brought Patrick and Angie along to offset the murk; their chemistry has only gotten fizzier, with a realistic dash of old-married-couple resolve (Entertainment Weekly )

Lehane is a writer bringing new confidence and an easy prowess to a new chapter in an epic story - the Kenzie-Gennaro saga (Washington Post )

[Lehane has] emerged from the whodunit ghetto as a broader and more substantial talent. . . .When it comes to keeping readers exactly where he wants them, Mr Lehane offers a bravura demonstration of how it's done (New York Times )

Each character...is described with economy and wit... and yet the most impressive aspect of the novel is the way that Lehane shows the psychological effects of having to deal with damaged people day after day (Evening Standard )

Lehane brilliantly uses the ethical dilemma - which comes first: the law or personal morality? - to explore the wintry wastes of Boston in the United States of Recession (Sunday Times )

A good thriller that does not shy away from questions of moral responsibility, and maintains a quick-fire pace and winning line in repartee (Metro )

A suitably thrilling addition to the duo's six-book saga (Shortlist )

A brilliant thriller (Uncut )

Boasts surface pace and moral depth that few can match (Scottish Sunday Herald )

A good crime thriller that doesn't shy away from questions of moral responsibility and maintains a quick-fire pace and winning line in repartee (Metro Herald Ireland )

Moonlight Mile is an excellent thriller because it takes its competent hero and heroine and puts them out of their depths (Independent )

Having enjoyed all of Lehane's books and being a particulary big fan of the Kenzie-Gennaro mysteries (especially Gone, Baby, Gone), I couldn't wait to read Moonlight Mile to catch up on the lives of my old friends. I'm sure most other readers who are big fans of Lehane's books and of this series will feel compelled to read this sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone, which takes place twelve years later. However, let me forewarn you that after reading this book you are likely to feel disappointed and a bit sorry to have gone back to visit Patrick, Angie, Bubba and Amanda (the girl who was an integral part of Gone, Baby, Gone).

My disappointment with Moonlight Mile has nothing to do with Lehane's plot concept, which is a good one. The plot invloves Kenzie and Gennaro, haunted by the past, revisiting the case that troubled them the most, following a twelve-year trail of secrets and lies. Believing that this time will be different, they vow to make good on their promise to find Amanda, who has once again disappeared. This vow leads them down a path that could cost them their lives.

My disappointment stems from what, until this book, I thought was an impossibility; which is that Lehane -- who has proven to be a master in creating rich, complex "real world" characters and dialogue that sounds "fresh from the street," -- could write a book in which some characters seem paper-thin and unbelievable, and which speak in a way that, while glib and, at times witty, doesn't ring true at all. This is especially true about the character of sixteen-year old Amanda, as well as of Lehane's Russian mob characters, which are virtually cartoonish. Further, the characters of Angie and Bubba, who have been favorites of mine throughout this series, don't come across as compelling or even particulary interesting in Moonlight Mile.

I hope this review is helpful in cautioning fans of this series that going back in time to revisit old friends might not always be the best move.

11 years after Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro found Amanda McCready in "Gone, Baby, Gone" she's disappeared again! Russian mobsters are after her as Kenzie and Gennaro hit her trail as well as wannabe gangsters, but as they investigate Amanda's sad life in the years following her return to her biological drug addled abusive mother, a strange picture emerges of the person she became. And what does the riddle mean - five people went into a room, two people died, but four came out?

I really enjoyed this novel, it's fast paced, well written, with some excellent characterisation. Dennis Lehane is a helluva writer who can write action better than some directors shoot it on film and the sequences involving the Russian mafia were exhilarating. He also picks up the tone of the two detectives perfectly from "Gone Baby Gone" almost as if it hadn't been 10 years since we'd seen the characters.

I will say this though - it's not as good as "Gone Baby Gone" or "Prayers for Rain", the storyline isn't strong enough. Neither is it as good as his masterpiece "Shutter Island" or his excellent historical novel "The Given Day", but Lehane on slightly above average is still a great read. The story takes nearly 100 pages to get going and it's over by page 370, the pacing ensuring that you'll be finished with this novel in two, if not one, sittings and that's a definite plus.

The only things that bothered me were the really syrupy lovey dovey nonsense between Kenzie and Gennaro - they're in love with each other, I get it, but does Lehane really have to go on about it? You'll know what I mean when you read it. Those passages aren't many but when they show up it undermines the gritty story and high quality of writing. And the ending... well I'm not 100% sure that's how Russian mobsters as sadistic as those portrayed in this novel would behave but who knows? It's not totally unrealistic but seems a bit unconvincing.

Overall, excellent mystery thriller! Well written, some great characters, an intriguing storyline, and a fast pace in keeping with the genre. While it's not Kenzie and Gennaro's best outing, it's still a good novel and definitely good for several hours' entertainment. Well done Dennis, keep `em coming!

I sped through this greedily like I have most of Dennis Lehane's Kenzie and Gennaro novels. I can't help myself. I have such a good time in their company. It's always a pleasure. And it was a pleasure this time too. I mean, Lehane has proved over and over again that he can write. That he can build believable characters (and not-so-believable, but unequivocally loveable characters like Bubba!) That he can paint portraits of Boston that manage to get under the skin of the city. I was thoroughly entertained by Moonlight Mile. And I was willing to go with the premise and was intrigued to see where the case in question would end up. Unfortunately, by the end of the book, I felt somewhat cheated. I could handle the world-weariness of the PI husband-and-wife team. I could handle their domesticity. I was even almost convinced by the imagining of Amanda McCready in her steel-souled, wise-before-her-time early adulthood. What I could not handle was the sheer preposterousness of so much of the plot. I could not handle the half-baked quality of most of the characters - both the major players and the incidental ones. I was disappointed with the sometimes lacklustre dialogue (dialogue, above all, was Lehane's forte in his previous novels in the series.) Everything seemed so cobbled-together. The germ of a good idea was here. Maybe, after the harrowing and deeply moral and deeply intelligent Gone, Baby, Gone I expected far too much in this sequel to that fantastic novel. But Moonlight Mile feels so lightweight in comparison. Farcical, even. Everything is done and dusted at such hyperspeed that the more profound themes of the novel are never given the chance to mature. My suspicion is that there was a commercial imperative to come up with a sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone so that it could be adapted into a film as soon as possible. I will be interested to see how the inevitable film of this book turns out. (Especially if the supremely watchable Casey Affleck again takes on the role of Patrick.) It's just a pity that Lehane has written what, to me, is easily the least impressive novel of his career so far.

It's not Lehane's best book but it is probably his most fun, certainly a lighter read than The Given Day, Mystic River or the dire Shutter Island. Read more

Moonlight mile
Quite a slick thriller with a twisting journey and a great style. Interesting characters on both sides of good and evil and plausible ending. Ripe for a screenplay I would guess.
