5.0 out of 5 stars YA Adventure fun 16 Jun 2013
By Adele
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love a bit of YA adventure from time to time and Moonlands does a great job. A well written blend of whimsy and darker adventure there is something in here for children and adults alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whimsy, horror, and invention. 13 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A novel for young adults that's fully cognisant of the blurry priorities of your average teenage girl, that sits nicely alongside the later Harry Potter books in tone. it succeeds in being the sort of young adult book that fits the genre by featuring fully realised and believable young adults rather than through dumbing down a plot, which means the door is wide open for us old adults to pick it up too.

Steven Savile's prose is often lush and colourful, which suits this fantasy of a young girl stumbling over her destiny beautifully. There's plenty of horror along the way, and Savile doesn't shy away from putting it front and centre where necessary, but there's a mountain of whimsy and invention to go along with it. If I have a grumble it's that the first half of the book, in which our heroine Ash discovers that she might have to be much more than an ordinary schoolgirl, is beautifully paced. The climax, as she battles for the fate of a world that sits alongside our own, is also tremendous. The middle, linking these two marvellous halves, feels underdeveloped. Having brought Ash to the Moonlands with her protector (it would be a horrible spoiler to tell you who that is), the plot rushes them with all speed towards the denouement with hardly a moment to appreciate the world that's being fought over. This is a shame, for the things we do learn hint at a glorious creation. It's a small gripe, and forgivable if the author makes good on the potential for further stories that he seeds through the closing chapters.

In short, this is a stylish and striking entry in a genre that was beginning to feel samey since Rowling left the field. Savile might be the man to shake it up again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchantment and adventure abound 17 Jun 2013
By DJP
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
With more magic and mystery than you can shake a very large YA Fantasy shaped stick at; Moonlands tells the story of the girl who doesn't fit. Ashley is more than she ever thought - and her enemies are determined to claim her first.

Written in full colour, replete with the noises and landscapes of London as a backdrop, the story races at a breathless pace until we fall headlong into the magical realm beyond the gate and our mind is pulled out, dipped in wild fantasy and shoved back in to let you take in the gripping climax.

Showing the wide range of Mr Savile's talent; Moonlands is a truly epic read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story for all ages 26 Jun 2013
By Jennifer L. Antle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Although it's set as a YA, this is one tale all can enjoy.

Ashley is different, different from others and she finds out just how much. And why..

I really enjoyed the story and how the author portrayed the different world's and the Concord set up by Grimm.

I also liked how out world was portrayed, each running off to do their own thing, not working together... I've never been to London but sure seems like how things are here.
I don't care for spoilers but the description tells ya what you need to know and I'll say as an avid reader this is one to check out.

I received this book to read free from the author however I'd gladly have paid for it, it's worth reading and encourage anyone who enjoys a good story to check it out!! I've encouraged my kids to read it and excited them to do so :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Moonlands: An informational reveiw and release history 24 Jun 2013
By Antmusic Fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What started out as an intended series of short releases eventually became what is now known as "Moonlands" by Steven Savile.

It all started with "Moonland Diaries: Traitor's Moon" back in 2011. This amazing Young Adult novella came with a promise to continue. BUT the story was eventually pulled from the digital market to the dismay of many people (myself included)

Thankfully, it was decided to collect the entire thing into one book and just release that. And here it is. "Moonlands" by Steven Savile.

Oh, just to make it more confusing, this release was originally released under the pseudonym "Aimee Carr" (maybe the publisher thought that was a "hipper" name). As you can probably see with the picture on this release, it is now released under the true name of the author: Steven Savile (which is nice for fans of his writing).

Check it out. It is unique and amazing.

Note: Steven Savile was also involved with another unique YA series called Latchkeys, which is also quite good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story! 21 Jun 2013
By BethE - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although far from Y I've read a few YA novels and this was one of the best. Very well written, well a few typos that were a bit distracting but didn't take away from the story.
The story pulls you in and holds you until the end. Would recommend this one for all ages, the writing isn't 'dumbed down' like some YA I have read in the past. Not sure if a sequel is planned but would love to read more!
