I have a Mapex Black Panther. It's a lovely snare drum. But, my lack of experience in the tuning department, has resulted in a nasty sounding over-tone. Sounds like a beer keg!
You need some overtone with a snare, otherwise it sounds weak and lacks any real volume.
I tried damper rings, but they totally killed the overtone and silenced the snare drum.
I heard some excellent reviews about Moongel and one of my Drummer buddies uses them.
I only had to use one pad. (Pack comes with 4). Now the amount of overtone is perfect. The snare sounds lovely :D

These little gel things are amazing! Take all the ring out of drums, and make drums sound way better. If you're not using them you're missing out!

If your drums are tuned well but still sound like a ringy mess.. BUY THESE!
I have both these and e-rings, and much prefer the moongel. The gel just sits on the outer edge of the batter head, or can be cut for more options. It stops the buzzing and over ring of drums, without crushing the sound and making them sound like a dull thud.
I found the e-ring over dampens the drums, which can be good for really troublesome ringing, but it often sounds a little too over the top. The moongel lets you hear the natural sound of the drum, just in a more controlled sound.
Still sticky after a few months and after a wash!
