A wonderful message for children.,
By
This review is from: Moonbird (Paperback)
I am a teacher who has participated in a 2 week whole school topic on this text. The children range in age from 7 - 11 and our focus was on communication, discrimination and other PSHE elements that the book deals with. It s a wonderful fairy tale about a deaf boy, and the troubles he has getting his parents to accept that they may have to find alternative methods to communicate with him. The message is loud and clear - we are all special and we all need to adapt to accommodate the differences in people around us.
It was quite tricky for the younger children to understand the message, but with discussion, role play, creative writing and art, inspired by the amazing illustrations by Jane Ray, the children have all taken away an important message. There should be more children's books which feature children with disabilities.

A lovely story,

I bought this for my deaf brother. In the past I have found it really hard to buy good books that have characters with disabilities. Generally those kinds of books always have an educational feel or are of a lower quality production but this book is really great.
The story is very sweet and the illustrations are beautiful. Importantly for me this is a normal children's book with an imaginative story that just happens to involve a child who is deaf, this means any child can read and enjoy it deaf or hearing.

In the Picture,
This review is from: Moonbird (Paperback)
A fairy tale about a young prince who is deaf and hears sounds in a different way. A Moonbird teaches him how to use his hands and eyes to communicate.
"I am thrilled to bits! I don't feel left out. It sounds like we are equally important" "We only know of two books with deaf characters. It would be nice to have lots of books!" Catherine, Nadeem and Pierre who are deaf. This book is in a list of early years picture books that feature disabled characters. The list was produced by UK disability charity Scope's In the Picture campaign, which encourages publishers, illustrators and writers to include disabled children in their books.
