This story starts shortly after the first ended. After a short holiday in Oslo where her father received a Nobel prize for his work, Marina returns to Aptos and continues to nourish her connection to the sea. Marina enjoys surfing, both with Lorelei and with her friends, her surfing ability develops considerably with her talent for being able to sense the waves and she gets attention for her ability and her daring. Marina and Ethan clash over her surfing and her continuation to want to see Lorelei, I thought he was annoyingly overprotective and much too intense and at times I wasn't entirely sure why Marina continued their relationship.
Along with surfing, Marina expresses her love for the sea through a series of paintings that she manages to sell, her friends also show signs of success in their own talents.
The first half of the novel is good but it really develops when Marina goes on holiday with her father, in an accident Marina is forced to confront her Mermaid heritage once more and it doesn't go unnoticed. The novel takes an exciting twist as Marina must try to keep her secret and keep her mermaid family safe.
I enjoyed this book more than the first, probably because all the characters are already well developed from the first book, this book shows Marina struggle to keep both aspects of herself balanced and her inner conflict is interesting, especially as she seems fairly unaware of the conflict, letting it express itself through painting and surfing.
All the characters I liked in the first book are included in this one as well as a few new ones, I liked Kimo and we get to know more about Shayla. Secrets are revealed about Aunt Evie and the world of Mermaid offspring is introduced. This was a good book with a nice pace, especially towards the latter half of the book where the drama unfolds at high speed. If you enjoyed the first book this sequel should definitely appeal and I look forward to finding out what's next for Marina and co.

This was an amazing book, we really liked it. It was existing from the first page and it was really hard to put it down. Marina's personality changes a lot during this book and affects her relationship with Ethan. We became frustrated at her personality change but the complexity of the situation also made the book more interesting. As amazing as Aptos sounds, it was fun that they traveled to other places too. The way Marina's life was turned upside down was really intriguing. We really liked the way Derrolyn writes. It is very easy to picture the characters and the places described in the book, except the cement ship, that one we had to google.

The Moon and The Tide is the second book in the Marina's Tales series and this instalment sees the relationship between Marina and Ethan intensify as they deal with their emotions of true love and jealousy. Marina is not only a talented artist but she also has an affinity for surfing, this makes her a wander in the surfing world that brings her adoration amongst some and evil hatred from others.

When Marina's passion for the ocean becomes an addiction that has grave consequences for herself as well as her sister and mermaid, Lorelei, she starts to realise that those who she loves are possibly in danger and her only option is to leave her home in Aptos. Marina soon discovers that those close to her have not always told the truth and there is more going on that she could possibly have imagined. One thing that Marina is certain of is Ethan, he is her beacon and thoughts of him always bring her back home.

There is a lot going on in this book and although at times it felt like the story was focused too much on the teenage angst between Marina, Ethan and her desperation for surfing, the final third of this book definitely moved the story in a different direction and the momentum picked up as Marina started to realise that there was more going on than people close to her were telling her and that being reckless was not just putting her in danger. Teenage angst aside, I did enjoy this book and at times found it difficult to put down. I will definitely continue reading the series as I want to find out if good will over come evil and see if teenage love will conquer all!
