About the Author

Perhaps it's because she was born under the sign of Aquarius, but Hilary Nangle has always had a passion for the coast. The ocean has been a constant in her life since she first watched the sun rise out of the Atlantic while she was waiting for the school bus. In college, Hilary discovered her love for writing. She briefly pursued a graduate degree in Middle East studies, but when she realized that the career path wouldn't include Maine she dropped out and became a ski and white-water rafting bum. That introduced her to Maine's back roads and offbeat attractions, and her sense of wanderlust was ignited. When she tired of her parents asking when she was going to get a real job, she drew on her writing strength, working as an editor for the North American Pro Ski tour, managing editor for a food trade publication, features editor for a daily newspaper, and now as a freelance writer/editor. She edits the state's tourism magazine, Maine Invites You; has contributed to numerous magazines, newspapers, and dozens of guidebooks; and is a travel expert for a local television show. In 2003, she won a Harold Hirsch award for magazine writing. She never tires of exploring Maine, always seeking out the offbeat and quirky. To her husband's dismay, she inherited her grandmother's shopping gene, and can't pass a used bookstore, artisans' gallery, crafts fair, or antiques shop without browsing. She's equally curious about food, and has never met a lobster she didn't like. Hilary grew up in Greater Portland, but she's been migrating up the coast ever since, and now calls the Mid-Coast home. She lives with her husband, photographer Tom Nangle, and an oversized dog, Zack, both of whom share her passions for coastal walks and Maine-made ice cream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best hiking guide ever 18 Jun 2012
By Ryan Whiteside - Published on Amazon.com
As a new resident of SW Maine, this is my goto guide book for hiking. I previously used the Foghorn book, which was very similar, but I lost it and Hilary does just as well in this one. This covers ALL of New England and provides just the information I need: Scenic and difficulty rating with estimated time, a short but concise description of each hike, and exact directions (including GPS coordinates which I punch into my Android phone's GPS). The scenic ratings in this book are spot on, love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with Moon handbooks 27 Feb 2013

When my husband and I decide to go anywhere on vacation in North America, first order of business is to buy the Moon handbook of that state or province. We are headed for Maine next fall, so I looked on Amazon, found the latest edition of the Maine Moon handbook, and ordered it. Maine is a good sized New England state, so I'll be referring to this book plenty as I plan for our trip out there.

Moon handbooks are so comprehensive and up-to-date. They include the sightseeing highlights of any particular area, a nice smattering of places to stay overnight, and a few tried-and-true restaurants in the area too. They give websites, phone numbers, prices of major attractions, length and difficulty level of popular hikes, and with nice zoomed-in maps of towns and small regions. I own 12-15 Moon handbooks already and I would not think of leaving home without one. And I can always count on Amazon to have the latest edition of whichever book I need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Guide 1 Jan 2013
By AmandaW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm very picky with my travel guide books because I'm not looking for the most expensive, 5-star experience while I'm traveling. This book gives a range of affordable, high quality options for dining, lodging, and exploring. I would definitely buy Moon Handbook guides for other destinations in the future.
