Red Stewart on The Great American Songbook Volume V

Biography

“Rarely has a singer had as full and unique a talent as Rod Stewart – a writer who offered profound lyricism and fabulous self-deprecating humor, teller of tall tales and honest heart breaker, he had an unmatched eye for the tiny details around which lives turn, shatter, and reform -- and a voice to make those details indelible. His solo albums were defined by two special ... Read more in Amazon's Rod Stewart Store

I am a very big fan of the Great American Song Book. To be frank I love the old standards and evergreens more than Rod Stewart. However the previous 4 volumes are superb. The band seem to be together and provide excellent backing for Rod. I really could listen to them all day and probably do this anyway. Unfortunately the backing on volume 5 is rather poor and not as clear as on previous versions. Perhaps the backing is provided by a keyboard instrument that mimics other instruments. There seems to be a lot of vibrato and echo effects. The band is not as good as in previous versions and the resulting effect is a rather unclear distorted backing sound. Sometimes even drowning out poor Rod, so I am afraid to say not one of the best recordings I have heard. Incidentally I am a musician and used to playing all of these numbers.

This is - as you would expect - a great album. Continues in the same vein as the other Great American Songbooks but is a little bit more upbeat than the predecessors. Rod's interpretations of some classic songs are superb. Soulful and sexy. Certainly good for late night listening with someone you love - or even late night listening on your own. I'm already on my third listen and it only dropped through the letterbox at 9.30am !!

Many years ago I was a lucky person who used to sell programes at lots of concerts held in Scotland where I went to uni, yes I know I am talking oh lots and lots and lots of years. Rod Stewart was one of my nights and he did all his most famous sonys Maggie May, Sailing etc. Dont get me wrong the man is talented not me talented though, I am not a fan of his rock style voice and thats okay as we all like what we like dont we.

I love his american song albums though I have every one he has produced and think he is amazing when singing this type of song. Robbie Williams did one, George Michael did wonderful version of swing, Michael Buble does it well but Rod Strewart does it better for me.

If you like swing, if you want a relaxing hour listening to music and having a cup of tea while curled up with your book its Rod every time.

In an amazing career Rod Stewart proves over and over again why he is one of the greatest performers of all time and surely ranks alongside Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley in the level of the best ever. From his time as a member of Steampacket,The Jeff Beck Group,The Faces through to his incredible solo career he's shown throughout to be among the elite of his profession. So here we get Volume V of The Great American Songbook ,surely he'd exhausted them by now but no this ones about the best of them all, why ? well this is one not to just enjoy but one to get your wife up and dance around the house too. Rod's in great voice here witha dozon great songs and a wonderful production throughout by Richard Perry and some pretty hot musicians..Fromj the opening 'That Old Black Magic' through evergreens like 'Beyond The Sea' to a seperb take on 'Fly Me To The Moon' to I think one of the best ever recordings of 'Moon River' we are just treated to Rod at his finest, wqith an abbum that gives us the full range os his voice and quality. This for me is one of the best at his best with a classic album in every way,and one we'll be playing for years to come it's one of those timeless sets that satisfies more with each playing.Do you know Rod just keeps on getting better and growing as an artist.Rod deserves his continual success and with albums as good as this he'll be there for some time yet.Five stars plus..unmissable.

I am not usually a Rod Stewart fan although do like a few of his more well known songs. I heard a couple of tracks from this album on the radio and really liked them so bought the album and am not disappointed. The album is brilliant and very relaxed in a gentle swing style. I have heard a few of the tracks sung by different artists so wondered how they'd compare as I like those too but Rod's voice is very easy to listen to and oddly enough my favourite track on the album is one I had never heard before. I've listened to it repeatedly, very nice to have on loud & dance round the house to or have on quietly whilst winding down before bed or working. I'm quite choosy when purchasing albums but I'm very glad I bought this one. I definately recommend it.

Can't agree with one previous reviewer.
Rod Stewart sings this type of song with a distinctive and stylish elegance - as all of the fantastic 'American Songbook' series have been.
Always superb arrangements and sung from the soul. Bring on Volume VI.

Having heard various tracks from Rod's American Songbooks on air, I was really looking forward to this. However, I was a bit disappointed by this one, particularly the first track. Not the best arrangement/rendition, but the album did get better.as it played on.
