I bought this light to go with a Cateye Volt 300. The Cateye is fantastic for illuminating the road but the beam is from a small lens and thus isn't ideal for other road users to notice you. The Moon Crescent is entirely the opposite and gives 180 degrees of visibility from a tiny super bright package.

The Crescent uses a new technology for LEDS called COB or Chip On Board. This is where the LED is built directly on the circuit board allowing this light to house 10 extremely bright white LEDS within a very small strip. This gives the effect of it being one single long LED which is key to the 180 degree visibility.

The light has 6 modes - Low, Medium and High Constant and 50%, 100% and fast strobe for flash. I tend to use the 50% strobe - even that is too bright to look at the front of the light if you hold it in your hand. The strobe is an extremely fast flash and whilst very visible I suspect it would annoy other road users.

The light is extremely light weight and comes with a well designed stretch silicon mount allowing both vertical or horizontal placement of the light. I personally prefer Horizontal as it gives a slightly wider beam and allows it to be lowered slightly so not to dazzle oncoming traffic. In constant mode there is just enough light hitting the ground to see by as a backup light but this is definitely best for being seen rather than to light the way ahead and would be ideal for commuting. Battery life is very reasonable for the size and is easily recharged through a micro USB port with a cable included in the box.

My only wish would be for a belt clip to be included as these would also be idea attached to clothes for cycling and also for running.

So I've always been frustrated with the switching modes on my previous lights which fall into two camps.

1. You can get dumb ones where pressing the button cycles through the modes including off: OFF ⇒ LOW ⇒ HI ⇒ FLASH ⇒ OFF. These are frustrating as you have to cycle through to your favourite mode every time you ride and cycle back to OFF again when you've finished. Plus it's easy to overshoot and around you go again.
2. There are also the cleverer ones that switch on/off with a long press of the button and return to the last mode you used. These are much better but having the hold the button makes turning them on when you're riding quite difficult, especially when the light is behind you.

So I was pleasantly surprised to find that this light will switch on with a single press of the button and will return to the last mode used. It also requires a long press to turn off which means you can't switch it off by accident. Strangely the constant and flashing modes are on separate cycles which you switch between with a quick double press of the button but that works OK: I tend to use the same mode every time anyway so it's not a big deal.

The light is very, very bright, even in its lowest setting. It's probably not bright enough for illumination out of town but it's also a bit blinding so hopefully that won't cause any problems with angry motorists.

The front light mounts only with a rubberised strap that is stretched onto a clasp around a handlebar or headset. The light itself clicks into a quick release slide mount on this strap any way up. The strap is easier to remove than the quick release mount so the mount is a bit redundant and obviously on there so that the front and rear lights can be manufactured identically.

This light does what it says on the tin….fairly good wide arc of bright light, with brightness and flash settings. The only thing I don't like is its limitations when it comes to mounting it. It can't be swivelled or rotated around its mount to its rubber strap, so you can only move it up/down around the handle bar. That's fine, if you have a section of free handlebar precisely perpendicular to direction of travel, but if you need to mount it to a slightly offset section of handlebar, then it points away from true forward, which is annoying. Moon lights themselves are excellent, and I only buy this brand….but unfortunately a common theme is poor thought about mounting.

really bright so you can be seen easily, no good to see by as there's no forward beam so need another light or to be cycling under street lights. USB charging is good as can charge off of a laptop at work or plug them in at home. Charge seems to last a while. Rubber mount is good if you want to swap them between bikes as it comes off and on in seconds, could be a draw back if you leave your bike somewhere public.

I don't like the flashing mode as its too bright and is really distracting.

I bought two sets for both the front and back as they really do make you visible to cars from a distance and you save lots on batteries as they are usb chargeable :)

Smaller than I thought, but does the job and is bright and more importantly lasts on steady for both too and from work (45 minutes each way)
