I very much appreciate the very existence of Moon's line of guides and handbooks. I travel a lot, and always buy a guide when going to a new city of any size. Initially I had planned to be loyal only to Fodor's, but that changed when I realized that many cities, Atlanta included, are too slight for inclusion in the Fodor's pantheon. So before my Atlanta trip, I picked up the handbook you're currently reading reviews about.
Unfortunately my Moon guide to Atlanta left me wondering if the city just had absolutely nothing going for it. I assume this can't be true--we're talking about a Beta World City, and one that attracts more visitors a year than Seattle and Dallas (according to the Office of Travel and Tourism industries)--so why is the information about the city so vague? If you don't want to go to the World of Coke, Georgia Aquarium (excellent, by the way) or the Zoo, there's not much for you in this guidebook. The "Sights" section only occupies 12 out of the handbook's 200 pages, (compared to 17 for "Shops") and I find that unacceptable. I bought this book so I would have some idea of what to do in Atlanta. In this very important regard it did not succeed.
So if you're going to Atlanta and, like me, find guidebooks really fun and useful, you might want to look into buying another brand. This book isn't terrible or useless, but I think you can do better.
